Restrictions on visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic had major implications for both patients and families, impacting health care outcomes. Individuals who experienced separation from hospitalized family members due to the “no visitor policies” during the COVID-19 pandemic were asked to participate in a qualitive study to elicit their perceptions. Themes derived from this pilot project were of advocacy, communication, emotional upheaval, isolation and abandonment. Ideas for improved patient and family experience discussed by the authors include visiting contracts for those wishing to spend time with loved ones diagnosed with COVID-19 or other infectious diseases requiring isolation, personal protective equipment for significant others, consideration of visitation policies for those patients without decision-making capabilities, and increased accessibility to communication aids for both patients and families.

In observance of World Rotaract Week, our program last week featured the President and Secretary of Lamar Rotaract – Hannah Huff and Christian Guillory. Hannah began by introducing the current officers of Lamar Rotaract with a slide showing their titles and pictures. Then she used another slide to describe Rotaract as a service club for young men and women who are 18 – 30 and dedicated to community and international service. She went on to explain that Rotaract membership stands at over 184,000 in 8,000 clubs worldwide. The clubs are self-governing and self-supporting and can be either university or community based. The clubs are sponsored by individual rotary clubs that offer guidance and support, making the clubs true “partners in service” and a key member of the Rotary family.
Christian then spoke about the projects Lamar Rotaract did and participated in for 2022-2023. The members filled Halloween goodie bags for Girls Haven and Boys Haven, which were greatly welcomed by both groups. They sent 75 Valentines Cards to Lamar staff that they felt were underappreciated. They partnered with Rotary to deliver 75 beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace. They began a new project called Fall into Action where they seek out opportunities to help local charities with anything they need done. They also participated with several other clubs to make sack lunches which were delivered to Anayat House. They are participating with 15-20 students in the Big Event at Lamar the weekend of April 1, a service project sponsored by Lamar. And finally, they participated in the 2023 Ugandan Project which involved some 500 volunteers putting together over 10,000 meals which were sent to Uganda.
Projects planned for the coming year include growing the Food Service Project and Fall into Action efforts, expanding volunteer opportunities, hosting talks at Lamar, working with local Interact Clubs to connect with high school students, building on their social events and designing a new t-shirt that is red instead of yellow, to better represent Lamar’s color.
The club also plans to become more involved in RYLA, attend more Rotary meetings, partner with Rotary more on events, and build their presence at Lamar. Lamar Rotaract has very ambitious goals going forward. It is so encouraging to see young men and women like this interested in serving their community and the world!
