Dr. Shannon Allen
Superintendent of Schools
Beaumont Independent School District
 

A lifetime community member of Beaumont, Allen graduated from West Brook High School and has served the District her entire career of 23 years. Her extensive experience ranges from a substitute teacher at Fehl Elementary; biology teacher at Clifton J. Ozen Magnet High School, where she served as department chair and district curriculum writer and presenter; elementary school curriculum coordinator; assistant principal and magnet coordinator of  Clifton J. Ozen Magnet High School; principal of Marshall Middle School; and principal of Clifton J. Ozen Magnet High School. She served as Associate Superintendent prior to assuming the role of Superintendent of Schools.

Dr. Allen earned her bachelor of science in biology with a minor in chemistry from Prairie View A&M University and obtained her master’s and doctoral degree in education from Lamar University.

Allen makes history as the first female to be appointed as superintendent of the Beaumont Independent School District.

Nominations for VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS
In recognition of “Service Above Self,” on Wednesday, November 20, the Rotary Club of Beaumont will recognize and honor individuals who exemplify a “service above self” attitude in their vocation and daily work.  With the date just preceding Thanksgiving, it is a wonderful time to give thanks for and recognize the good work of others in our community.
 
 
These coveted awards are given annually to community members who demonstrate exceptional service, honesty, and friendliness in performing their jobs.  Some past recipients describe receiving this honor as "a treasure,"  "very special," and "the only time I've received anything like this."   If you are observant when patronizing some workplaces in town, you will see a Vocational Excellence certificate awarded to a recipient in previous years, still hanging proudly where all can see.
 
 
We appreciate your support of this honor with your nominations of deserving people who you have come in contact with through your business transactions.  If not completed yet, please have your nomination submitted by the deadline of November 11.

When we determined we had no choice but to move our weekly meetings to a temporary location which could serve as our our "home" until renovations are completed at the MCM Elegante, one challenge was to have our meetings go on in typical fashion as much as we are able.  A big thank you goes to Allen Lea who loans us the flags from the McFaddin Ward House every week.  He even brings them to the Broussard Centré  and posts them each time.   Thank you, Allen, for the extra effort and the demonstrated Service Above Self!

'Milestone' in polio eradication achieved

The last case of a key form of polio was seen four years ago - but another is still circulating.

The second of three forms of the polio virus has been eradicated, experts have announced.

The world was declared free of type 2 four years ago - and now the World Health Organization has said type 3 has also been eradicated.

But type 1 is still circulating in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"End Polio Now!"

Arne Almquist, our club's End Polio Now Chair, began his talk by saying we are “this close” to ending Polio.  He said he first heard that and saw the “this close” gesture back in 2010 at the Rotary International Conference in Montreal.  And today we are even closer.  We are almost there.
 
Arne gave statistics on where we are in the fight.  As of September 25th of this year we had 1 reported instance of Poliovirus in Afghanistan, 11 instances in Pakistan, 1 report in Nigeria, 4 reports in Angola, and 2 in Myanmar.  We are truly very, very close to accomplishing the second eradication of a disease in the history of humankind.  And since 1985, it is Rotary that has led the fight.
 
Arne said he found a book in his library in Kentucky titled The History of the Eradication of Smallpox.  Smallpox was a scourge that killed millions around the world and affected many millions more, leaving scars they would carry for life.  Smallpox was finally eradicated from the population and exists now only in the laboratory to be used if it ever reappears.  Smallpox was the first known disease to be eradicated through human effort.  Polio can be the second.  Arne said there were three things we could do to help see the effort through:
  • First – Feed the Pig! – all dollars put in Marco Polio will be sent to Rotary International to continue the fight
  • Second – have your gift matched by the Club – designate your gift to End Polio Now – this can also move you closer to earning a Paul Harris Fellow
  • Third – you can go to the website, look in the upper right hand corner and click “Donate” – a form will appear through which you can make your donation
Arne then introduced the documentary Dare to Dream: How Rotary Became the Heart and Soul of Polio Eradication. Our own Rotarian Chuck Mason is a Producer of the film.
