On April 6, the date selected for the annual presentation of the T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics, we are fortunate to have Dr. Henry Venta as the speaker.
Enrique (Henry) R. Venta is Dean of the College of Business at Lamar University and Professor of Management. Prior to accepting this position in 2002, he worked at Loyola University Chicago. His teaching and research activities have been in the areas of strategic issues in operations, work systems design, operations planning, total quality management, managing the service sector, and clinical decision making.
Dr. Venta has served as independent consultant for various government agencies, and national and international corporations. Henry has served on the Texas Emerging Technology Fund Advisory Committee and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the South East Texas Economic Development District.
Moreover, Dr. Henry Venta is
a Rotarian, a member of the Rotary Club of Beaumont since 2002. Like any Rotarian, he adheres to the Four-Way Test. In his presentation, Henry will examine some of the ethical issues that managers face in completing performance evaluations and discussing how the Four-Way Test can help avoid problems.

ROTARY TO RECOGNIZE LOCAL
STUDENTS FOR SERVICE ABOVE SELF
2014 Recipients
The Rotary Club of Beaumont will recognize and honor students who have exemplified the Rotary "Service Above Self" attitude by demonstrating exceptional service in their school and community.
Award presentations will be made Wednesday, April 27, 2016, during the meeting to celebrate other youth activities and programs. Please note that this special recognition is not accompanied by a monetary award or scholarship.
April 27 will be our Youth Day Celebration when we recognize the Interact Clubs, honor the Youth Service Above Self honorees, and name the two Rotary Scholarship recipients. We will invite all these students, school sponsors and parents to attend the Rotary lunch meeting that day. If you can spare a lunch ticket or two in order for us to graciously accommodate these guests, please donate at the meeting on Wednesday. There will be a donation spot at the lunch line.

SERVICE PROJECTS ARE NAMED
Many thanks to the service project committee for their work in selecting worthwhile quarterly projects for the remainder of 2016.
They recommended and the board approved the following:
* 2nd quarter of 2016 (tentatively Saturday, May 21) - FYI Center,
Buckner's outreach program located at Lamar for youth and young adults who were raised in foster care:
o Paint five rooms
o Budget - $500 for supplies
* 3rd quarter (August 2016) - Beaumont Children's Museum
o Construct and paint two walls to enclose a hands-on exhibit space
o Budget - $500 for supplies
* 4th quarter of 2016 or 1st quarter of 2017 - Women & Children's shelter
o Refurbish a family room and meeting space.
o Paint, hang blinds, assemble carpet squares for rugs.
o Budget - $500 for supplies
o Timing is dependent on completion of renovation plans.
* Flexible, can be done at any time - Nutrition and Services for Seniors
o Assemble shelf stable meal boxes
o Budget - $0
o This project can be done at lunch, in the evening, on weekends, or whenever we can get a group of Rotarians. The need is ongoing, so no matter when we schedule it they can use the help.
Our work to address these community needs will only be successful if we have the full support of our members. I challenge each of us to make a commitment to work on at least one of them before the end of the year and be prepared to volunteer when the work dates are announced.

Kelly Interact Invites You
On April 7 from 5:30-7:30 pm there is a cultural festival in the cafeteria of the school that is open to the public. The Interact club will have a booth and are preparing dishes to serve! Come by and support the Interact Club!
On Saturday April 9, Kelly Interact will participate in the Buckner Family Fun Event. They will have a booth and help the children make kites, play 4-square and also paint faces. Rotarians are invited to attend and participate with them.
The group's Sponsor at Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School is Suzanne Lewis. The Club Sponsors are Jim Baxter, Jeff Beaver and Mellie Bevilacqua. All have done a wonderful job assisting the Interact student organization.

"Producing Produce
and the Grow to Share Garden"

Today's Rotary speaker was the infamous Elaine Shellenberger, Executive Director for the notorious Nutrition and Services For Seniors, and, of course, a member of our Club. Elaine brought 'back-up muscles' known as Master Gardeners Toni Clark and Tony Lucenti.
Elaine presented "Grow To Share Garden," a video showing slides of recent projects that have been completed through the widespread support of Rotary members and others from the community. She highlighted aspects of the project like the "fence construction" which Rotary completed last summer (spanning months of "rain-out days!) as well as the "leveling initiative" and the creation of 15 garden beds.
The 15 garden beds were created using the best available soil secured and bordered with an enormous number of cinder-blocks. The selection of seeds for last season ranged from carrots, cabbage, broccoli, arugula, onion, mustard, and lettuce. The spring crop, which includes okra, cucumbers, tomatoes, peas, as well as strawberries and blueberries, has been planted.
Toni and Tony covered some gardening tips such as "knowing which seed to plant, in which season, as well as the caution to use quay soil and seed," and the suggestion of using coffee grounds and eggshells to enrich the soil.
It was heart-warming to see pictures and hear stories of the first harvest and the positive and grateful responses from those who have enjoyed the treasures of the "Grow to Share" Garden that we helped to create.
