The Board of Managers proudly announced the hiring of Dr. John W. Frossard as Superintendent of Schools in May of 2015 and he actually took the leadership role on May 11. In just four months, the positive change in the school system, the classrooms, and the community at large is obvious. While the changes and improvements have been evident in the school district's efforts to be transparent, we are anxious to learn more about the goals for this year from Dr. Frossard.
Dr. John Frossard has more than 30 years in education as a teacher, principal and school administrator. He has served as superintendent of Lenoir County Public Schools in Kinston, NC; as chief academic officer, chief human resources officer and assistant superintendent for Fort Bend ISD, Sugar Land, Texas; and, principal for four new high schools in Virginia. Before education, Frossard began his professional career in banking as an internal auditor in Virginia.
It is an honor to recognize former Rotarian Carolyn McGuire with a memorial resolution on Wednesday, September 9. Please be with us to honor her in this most special club tradition.
September 11 is recognized as Patriots Day and a very significant day of remembrance in our nation's history. It is significant in our flag project as well.
Please make plans now to be a volunteer with the distribution of flags that morning.
The first wine-tasting event to benefit the Beaumont Rotary Foundation and the education projects it funds, "Wine Down With Rotary," will take place on Thursday, October 1 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Beaumont Event Centre. Get tickets by linking here.
Envisioned and inspired by President Pat Anderson, the event will recognize the selfless work of the members of the Board of Managers while the Club raises necessary funds for our education projects. And, as Pat has said many times, it will meet the FIFTH question of the Four-Way Test: Is it fun?
We need sponsors for many aspects of the event: $400 underwrites a table of appetizers, $250 funds a case of wine, even your $100 donation will help us give complimentary tickets and gifts to our honorees, cover printing and advertising costs, etc. (Click on image below to see what Sponsorships are still available.)
(Click on image to commit to a sponsorship.)
We are grateful for the sponsors who have already confirmed their support: Sam Fazio/The Printery printed and donated the event tickets, MehaffyWeber Attorneys are underwriting the wine glasses, Angela & Ray Baker are underwriting the evening's entertainment, and a growing number of members and their firms are stepping up to underwrite cases of wine. We will be advertising for them in return for their donation. Please patronize these businesses in return for their support of our efforts and please add your business to the list of sponsors!
Of course, the event will only be successful with lots of people attending. We need Rotarians to purchase and sell tickets! For only $35 (in advance), you and your friends can enjoy a tasting of up to six carefully selected, choice wines. We will soon have tickets for members to take on consignment so you can sell at your workplace and to friends. Please get a bundle at the meeting or phone the Rotary office at 842-1913.
For your convenience, you can purchase tickets at a meeting or go online to make donations by credit card.
Rotary After Hours last week at D'Vine Winery was great fun! About a dozen Rotarians and guests attended and enjoyed the appetizers and ambiance of the winery.
Interact and Rotaract clubs are joining together to pack toiletry bags for local youth rescued from human trafficking. Please help by saving small personal care items such as soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, ponytail bands, combs, and hairbrushes. You can bring donations to any meeting and we will see that it is given to the youth organizations.
We send wishes for a quick recovery to our friends and fellow Rotarians who have been ill or had a recent surgery. We hope you are better soon!
Lee Freeland
Sylvester Hill*
*Monday afternoon: We learned that Sylvester is still in ICU at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital. He is heavily sedated but considered stable following a major car accident on Friday. One leg was operated on soon after the accident, and he will undergo a second surgery on the other leg this evening. We continue to send him wishes for a successful and speedy recovery.

The Rotary Club was honored to have Ken Evans, President of Lamar University, as the guest speaker this week. It was his first time in two years to address the club. Over that time span, there have been many changes as Lamar.
First, LU had the largest increase in revenue of any university in the Texas State University System. There are several reason for this including a growth in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) field, active recruiting in Houston, and success in athletics.
Also, several buildings have been approved or are in the process of construction. These include a new science and technology building that will add 65,000 square feet of space and the new Reaud Building set to open in 2016. Next, Lamar is in the process of forming a new degree that will educate students in Port Management. The Port of Beaumont is such a vital asset to our community that it makes sense for Lamar to develop this field of study to help student manage, develop and grow ports around the globe.
Finally, Dr. Evans reminded us that Lamar is vital to the local economy. Lamar is directly responsible for adding over $270 million to the local economy.
