The local media provides frequent reports on the progress being made in many areas of operations within the Beaumont Independent School District. To tell us of the challenges, progress and expected results, we are fortunate to have Dr. Jimmy Simmons, Honorary Rotarian and the President of the BISD Board of Managers. to provide an update on the School District and news reports of financial standing, testing and more.
Are you going to be a part of club leadership in 2015-16? Attend the District Assembly!
Open to all Rotarians, the District Assembly is designed to give clubs and their respective leadership teams a jump-start on the upcoming Rotary year. There are multiple break-out sections, so clubs are encouraged to send as many members as possible to ensure that your club has the information and training to make the 2015-16 Rotary year successful. Read through the schedule by linking to it here.
Plan to attend Saturday, April 11, 2015 in Montgomery, Texas.
Visit the District webpage and link to the registration through the event link/date. If you need assistance with registration or more information, contact the Rotary Office. We can arrange carpooling for Rotarians attending.
As host club, we hope to have good representation. Please register to attend some or all of the Conference.
General schedule:
Friday, May 1 - Pre-Conference activities and tours will start at 1:00 p.m. Sign up for the "Shoot Down Polio!" Clay Shoot with proceeds to benefit the End Polio effort, or tours of local museums and attractions. We flip the switch for the official conference opening at the Beaumont Rotary Centennial Playground; then at dinner in the adjacent Beaumont Event Centre the spotlight will shine on district clubs for the Governor's Spotlight Awards.
Saturday, May 2 - The day will be full of presentations and collaborations about the good work being done across the District. There will be time to exchange ideas and share new plans. In the evening, the spotlight will focus on the District leadership at the traditional Governor's Dinner. We have some "top brass" showing up for the "top brass!" (Click on the attachment below for a sneak preview.) You don't want to miss this!
Sunday, May 3 - The spotlight will turn this morning to light up the great work being done by Rotarians collectively through the Rotary Foundation. You will be moved, motivated, and inspired. Plan to be here until around 11:00 a.m. when the lights will go dim on the 2015 Conference, but participants take the glow back to their respective clubs to continue to "Light Up Rotary!" across District 5910.
The 2015 District 5910 Conference is fast approaching and the committee in your Rotary club is working hard to insure that this event is as grand as it can be!
To put on such an event in the style that our Club does, with amazing food, fun and entertainment, we are asking for your assistance with financial support. We have designed various sponsorship packages which will, in turn, benefit your business with advertising to several local clubs in our area and those in other parts of the district as well. Look at the map and you can easily see the large area and number of clubs in District 5910.
We believe the “Spotlight on District 5910" conference will be a huge success and we want you to be a part. Please consider becoming a sponsor by choosing one of the packages and become a sponsor to help us "Light Up Rotary" and District 5910 even brighter!
Phone me for more details or send your financial support along with your business logo to the Rotary office.
The Special Projects Committee has one project in preliminary stages and plan to have it completed before mid-2015. That means it is time to look ahead and plan how the Club can contribute to another hands-on project that can have an impact on our community. Give some thought to it and talk to your friends and associates and submit a proposal for consideration.
As the warm sunny days begin to outnumber the cold ones of winter, the Beaumont Rotary Centennial Playground gets more and more use. A teacher sent some photos recently of her students enjoying an afternoon of fun.

Special thanks to Larry Beaulieu for providing some great photos and video taken with a drone recently. It is really great to see and watch live action of the playground in full use. If you look closely, there are children on every piece of equipment, a birthday party with balloons, and fun going on all over. Most will be posted on the Facebook page soon so watch for them.
There was a sea of red and white striped Dr. Seuss look-alike hats at the Rotary meeting on April 1. These Rotarians were happy to pose for a photo as they celebrate the conclusion of the Rotary Goes to School project.
Our speaker today was Jo Anne Settles, Professor of Nursing for Victoria College and member of the District 5930 Polio Plus Committee. Ms. Settles was introduced by Becky Mason.
Ms. Settles presented a talk entitled "Polio: We thought It Was Gone!"
The Polio virus:
is incurable;
is a virus that enters the human body, through the mouth, nose, throat;
reproduces in the intestines;
moves into the bloodstream and body and causes paralysis of the lower limbs.
Transmission results from fecal-to-mouth transmission increased by poor sanitation. The polio virus does not replicate anywhere except in the human body.
In 1952, there were 558,000 reported cases. In the 50's, the standard course of action was to place patients in a machine known as an "iron lung." The tube-like contraption performed the "breathing" for the patient and many lived in them for decades.
WHO, the World Health Organization, organizes the global-efforts to eradicate polio. UNICEF provides the vaccines. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) provides technical support. Rotary International provides the "boots on the ground," administering the vaccine throughout the world using National Immunization Days (NIDs) which are strategically scheduled in targeted countries.
Data, as recently as last week, recorded the present number of cases of polio in the entire world at 21! Twenty cases are in Pakistan and 1 case is in Afghanistan. In 2014, India was assessed as "Polio-free" - WOW!
Although the Bill Gates Foundation continues to match Rotary International contributions, it is Rotary that had led the way. Way to go, Rotarians!
The task of administering the polio vaccine is daunting, having resulted in the death of 200 aid-worker volunteers in the past 20 years.
Funding this effort continues to be one of its greatest challenges. "The children of the world are waiting...for YOU to fulfill your promise."
Sponsor ads appear on the website continuously and are included in the sidebar of the RotaryGrams each week. One is spotlighted weekly to express our appreciation.
