The South East Texas Economic Development District is responsible for maintaining the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the Hardin, Jefferson, and Orange county region. And CEDS is exactly what Dean Robinson wants to talk about.
Dean Robinson was mayor of Silsbee for three terms and served as president of the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission. He was appointed by Governor Bush to the Community Block Grant Committee and by Governor Perry to the Commission on Disaster Recovery and Renewal that was established after Hurricane Ike. He is an active Regional Economic Development volunteer for more than 25 years and served as president of two regional economic development organizations.
Dean currently serves as president of the Southeast Texas Economic Development Administration District Grant Board and serves on the board for the Lamar Institute of Technology Foundation and the Southeast Economic Development Foundation.

That's right! Rotarians are catching the spirit and recruiting for the team we all belong to - ROTARY!
The Rotary League has four teams being lead by Team Captains Jennifer Burch, Ty Coudrain, Michael Perez, and Laura Winegeart. The Captains are choosing team names and we will announce those soon, but the challenge is to see which team can recruit the most NEW members to the club from August 1 until June 30, 2019. (There will likely be a factor for retention in the rules of the game, too, but that is still being determined right now!)
Meanwhile, know that you are being "scouted" and if you haven't yet been asked to join a team, you will be soon. The ball's already in play!

Rotary District 5910 had the annual Interact Club Training on Saturday, August 11 at Lone Star College in Montgomery, TX. This annual event is always a great help to the Interact Clubs and the student leaders as they begin to return to school and make plans for the Interact Clubs' year ahead. We are anxious to see what they will accomplish in 2018-2019!
Students from West Brook High School Interact Club (blue shirts) and the new Interact Club forming at Beaumont United High School paused to pose for a photo. They learned a lot and made new friends from other Interact Clubs in District 5910.
The Youth Services Lane was well-represented at the Training Workshop and had a good time as well! Thank you for attending, bringing the students, and being a part of helping to make these clubs a great learning experience for the Interact members!

"Lamar Athletes to be Champions!"

Today's Rotary speaker was Marco Born, Athletic Director for Lamar University. Mr. Born was introduced by Bob Spina, Lamar College Dean of Education and Human Development. Marco began his Powerpoint presentation by identifying three target-areas that Lamar University focuses on, as they relate to Lamar students involved in athletics: (1) to become champions in the classroom; (2) to become champions on the field and court; and (3) to become champions in life.
Students strive for these goals, through their "athletic advisors," who help the students focus on solutions to many "life issues" such as balancing checkbooks, resume writing, public speaking, general etiquette, and life skills. The ultimate goal is to have each student receive their degree with one hand, while wearing a championship ring on the other!
Soccer, volleyball, and football will be starting soon. Because most athletes like to eat, Lamar has improved the available nutrition, as student-athletes keep getting bigger, taller, and faster.
Lamar University had 111 student-athletes named to Spring Semester Commissioners Honor Roll, with 35 of those student-athletes achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average!
Marco encouraged individual and corporate sponsorships. Marco also promoted "tailgate" parties for birthdays, reunions, family outings, etc., and hopes that all Rotarians will "get your tickets early." He emphasized that the revenue from ticket sales helps the school and the athletics department to be in the best position to prepare for their respective seasons.
Lamar University's football home game opener will be against Kentucky Christian on September 1, 2018, Labor Day Weekend, and will include sky divers and fireworks.
Marco also strongly encouraged all Rotarians to join the Cardinal Club: Make An Impact!!!
He concluded by offering a genuine "thank you all for your continued support."
