Dr. Lonnie Howard is not reticent when talking about his early years and challenges of childhood. His parents were hard-working and provided what they could, but higher education was not what you would have assumed or predicted. However, he remembered his mother’s inspiring saying…"It doesn’t matter where you start from in life; the important thing is where you finish."
Despite not graduating until age 36 with his first degree (associate in welding), less than 12 years later, Dr. Howard had earned an AAS, AGS, BS, MS, and PhD. Remarkably, his leadership experience includes the Community College, Technical College, and Tier One Research University models. He progressed quickly from faculty, department chair, researcher, educational consultant, associate vice president of instruction, interim vice president of academic affairs, director of university outreach, executive director of the school of professional studies, to college president.
Dr. Howard assumed the position of President of Lamar Institute of Technology just a year ago. He will share his assessment of the year and plans for the expanding and growing Institute. Come hear the latest "From the President's Desk."

July 4th is only two weeks away and as a major holiday, a number of those who normally volunteer for the flag project will be unavailable. We need all who are able to volunteer. Besides, there just could not be a better way to start the day!

DUES INVOICING AND THE BILLING CYCLE
Rotary operates financially at the club, district, and international levels and dues support the work done at each level. Dues are billed to the individual at the club level, andthe club pays District and International dues on behalf of every member who is on the membership roster on January 1 and July 1.
In order for the club to pay dues to Rotary International and District 5910 on July 1, each member must be up to date on his/her dues to the Club no later than July 1 and January 1.
In order to make it as convenient as possible for you to submit a timely payment, the Board of Directors has requested that the invoices be sent to members 30-45 days in advance so that each member has adequate time to budget for the expense, process payment, and assure that the invoice is paid by July 1.
You should have received your invoice electronically on May 16. If you have requested to have a printed copy mailed to you, it should be received within the week. Please phone the office or email admin@beaumontrotaryclub.org to request a different method of billing or payment.
If you wish, you can submit your credit card information to be kept on file so that payments are processed for you in advance of the deadline.

It is always a very special day when we have the opportunity to recognize club members for contributions to the successes of the year. President Ted will present awards and recognition on June 27. He will also recognize those who have earned Perfect Attendance for the year either through meeting attendance, and eClub makeup, serving on and attending committee meetings, or attending a makeup event.
Did you submit a makeup for every meeting you missed? Do you know you can see your attendance report on the ClubRunner app? If you have not downloaded the CR app, do it now and/or get assistance at the next Rotary meeting.

Welcome to One of the Newest Rotarians in the World!
On June 14, the Club welcomed David Shoemaker, Maintenance Manager at ExxonMobil's Beaumont Polyethylene Plant, as one of the newest Rotarians in the world. A Beaumont native, David is married to his high school sweetheart, Heather, and has 4 young children. He graduated from West Point and served as an Infantry officer in Afghanistan and various areas stateside. David was sponsored by his sister, Stephanie, and Ashley Alemayehu. He wrote, "I was inspired to join Rotary by friends, my sister, and my continued desire for selfless service or Service Above Self, particularly in the community and country that has already given me so much." We are happy to have David in the Club to inspire us to greater service!

"Scary and Amusing Lessons
for Employers and Employees"

Barbara Barron is an attorney at Mehaffy Weber and gave a great presentation on scary and amusing lessons for employers and employees. Currently, the most popular topics in employment law revolve around sexual harassment, non-competes, employee recordings and I-9 forms.
Sexual harassment lawsuits are very common these days. The easiest way to prevent these is to resist the urge to treat stars differently. Many times, a company will grant a high level executive or star employee leeway in legal matters. The settlements in these law suits are getting larger each year.
Non-Compete laws are very iffy and Texas is a very liberal state in interpreting these laws. Items that are protected with non-compete clauses are sales figures, trade secrets, product development, etc.
Work place recording occurs when an employee secretly records a conversation with another person. These cases are now half of all EEOC lawsuits. Texas is a one person consent state – there must be at least one person with the knowledge that a recording is occurring.
I-9 forms began in 1986 and are a way to document that person is eligible to work in the U.S. Each company needs to have an I-9 on every employee and hold them in separate files.
Finally, Mrs. Barron stated that every company needs an employee handbook or manual. These can be generated from the internet or can be specialized and created from an attorney. Regardless of the source, every business needs one.
