PROGRAM REVIEW
September 4, 2024

Dr. Shannon Allen
Superintendent
Beaumont ISD
By Joanne Brown and Tim Sudela

Dr. Shannon Allen, Superintendent of the Beaumont Independent School District was the guest speaker at the September 4 meeting of the Rotary Club of Beaumont. Dr. Allen is a graduate of BISD. After obtaining a BS in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Prairie View A&M University, she received masters and doctoral degrees in education from Lamar University.

Dr. Allen shared information on the VATRE (Voter Approval Tax Rate Election) proposition that will be included on the November 5 ballot. BISD Board of Trustees and Dr. Allen are requesting affirmative votes on the proposition to move $0.09 from the Interest and Sinking (I&S) bucket to the Maintenance and Operations (M&O) bucket. Based on current property values, this will generate an additional $13M to the M&O bucket which is used to establish the budget each year. The majority of these additional funds would be directed to a much needed increase in teacher and staff compensation. Funds will also be directed to school safety measures, infrastructure improvements, and programming. Approval of this proposal will not affect individual tax bills. The BISD tax rate has steadily DECREASED in the past seven years from $1.29405 in 2018 to $0.96491 in 2024. Early voting runs from October 21 until November 1. www.bmtisd.com/vatre

Rotarians welcoming all to the meeting were Christina Lokey, Jeff Beaver, and Jeannete Fresne. Serving at the Head Table were Past President Lynn Castle, presenting the invocation, Past President Bobbie Applegate, leading pledges to USA and Texas flags, and Jacqueline Gunner, introducing meeting guests.
