The Rotary Club of Beaumont, TX, is a large and diverse fellowship of inspired business, professional, and civic leaders with significant community connections that foster the ideals of Service Above Self and high ethical standards.
Taking full advantage of the opportunities provided by the Zoom platform, this week we are excited to announce that we will enjoy our speaker, Tabitha Sparks, from her hometown of Milwaukee, WI. Moreover, we will have our weekly meeting jointly with the Rotary Club of Palestine. Come join us to meet some Rotarians from the most northern part of District 5910 and learn more about the The Rotary Foundation from a staff member located in the northern part of the United States!
Tabitha Sparks is the Annual Giving Officer for Rotary Zone 25B. In her role, Tabitha develops fundraising strategies to support the Annual Fund by providing counsel and resources to regional and club fundraising volunteers. She helps Rotarians in the Texas area motivate and inspire other Rotarians to support their club and The Rotary Foundation. She works with leaders in clubs and districts to raise awareness about the Annual Fund, The Rotary Foundation and the good we can do by supporting these causes, attract new donors and engage current donors.

"Ring that Bell!" Salvation Army Bell-Ringing; the front entrance of Parkdale Mall; 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Soon, and very soon, you will hear that familiar sound of bells ringing at the doorways of businesses. That's right, it signifies that the holidays are upon us and that the Salvation Army has started their "bell-ringing" campaign!
Every year, nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army in the form of meals, shelter, after-school programs, job referrals, youth shelter intervention programs, rehabilitation services, and more. It is certain that the number of people needing assistance from the Salvation Army will be considerably more because of the COVID pandemic. The gifts you help collect through the Red Kettle will enable these local Salvation Army programs and services to continue providing help and hope to those in need.
For a number of years, the Rotary Club of Beaumont has been one of the many organizations that tend a booth at Parkdale Mall and participate in the collection process. It is a demonstration of "Service Above Self."
Gary Moncla is Chair of the project and is asking YOU to volunteer to help this year. Please sign up for the hour(s) you can help on Saturday, December 12. This is an outdoor service project so everyone should be safe from COVID spread, but you are encouraged to also wear a facemask and distance yourself from others while serving. Sign up your spouse or a friend or two to work with you, and if the sign-up form does not allow enough room, phone the Rotary Office (842-1913) and ask that the number of spaces be expanded for your group. Thank you.
Thank you to all who donated to our drive to send assistance to the teachers of Vincent Settlement Elementary in Sulphur, Louisiana who lost so much when Hurricane Laura devastated their school and all of the southwest region of Louisiana. We will be donating each teacher a generous gift card to purchase necessary items that were destroyed by this disaster. We will share more with you in the RotaryGrams next week after the delivery is made to the school.

Rotarians, we really need you to become a part of the weekly meeting! Very few people are volunteering for the head table assignments and we spend a lot of time each week trying to recruit talented Rotarians! Look at your calendar and select a date that is convenient for your schedule. Red Badges are strongly encouraged to volunteer for this opportunity so you can move closer to your blue badge and members can get to know you better too.
County District Clerk Jamie Smith was our speaker for Rotary and he started off by stating that the one thing he is most proud of is serving his country during Desert Storm. Veterans Day is the time for honoring those who protect or have protected the safety and rights of American citizens. We may have differences in politics, race, economics, education or religion, but when it comes time to defend our nation, something amazing happens. These differences fade away, and it is no longer “I”, but “we” in the armed forces.
He pointed out that three principals guide the men in the armed forces – pride, dedication and love. Pride to wear the uniform and serve our country, dedication to serve it in the best way possible, and love for our country and the values we share as Americans. Seeking fame or glory is not why they take the oath to serve our country, but to support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, to bear true faith and allegiance to the United States and to obey the orders of the President of the United States and their officers. Their dedication to putting service above self has resulted in many of them making the supreme sacrifice.
This pride, dedication and love for country that these men and women have displayed has allowed future generations the opportunity to have the same pride, dedication and love for our country. No loss of life is wasted in the defense of our nation. He quoted a famed poet who said “freedom in America is not really free, we often pay a price to keep our liberty. Freedom in America isn’t really free, it’s up to American patriots, it’s up to you and me.”
He then compared these three qualities to an equilateral triangle, no side is weaker than the other, no side is stronger than the other, no side shorter than the other, no side taller than the other. These three qualities are like a tripod that provide the stability to bear the weight that they must bear.
Thank you, veterans, for the sacrifice you have made to preserve our freedom. Thank you also to the families of veterans who have made a sacrifice as well.
We honor all veterans today, because without them, we may no longer be the land of the free or the home of the brave.
