PROGRAM PREVIEW
September 5, 2018

"Texas Trafficking: A Hard Look at What is Happening in our State"

Kirsta Melton
Assistant Attorney General
Deputy Criminal Chief
Human Trafficking and Transnational/Organized Crime Section
Office of the Texas Attorney General

"Human trafficking is a crime that is difficult to detect and the misconception is that it is only found in shady corners of city streets or dark motel rooms. Victims of this heinous crime can be found living among us. These abused women, men, and children can be found shopping in our grocery stores, riding next to us on the bus, and even attending our schools."
 - from Introduction to Human Trafficking: A Guide for Texas Education Professionals, July 2014

Human trafficking is a media buzz word that often conjures images of brothels in Thailand or confusion with the ongoing immigration debate.  This presentation cuts through the confusion, arms the participant with an understanding of what human trafficking is and is not and helps them recognize that this is a Texas problem with Texas buyers, sellers and victims.  It challenges us to change the culture in which we live from one that identifies with and honors perpetrators to one that provides safety, security and genuine reintegration for trafficking survivors.

Kirsta Melton graduated from Cornell University in 1993 and received her JD and Masters in Public Affairs from the University of Texas in 1998.   In 2012, Kirsta helped establish and lead the Bexar County DA’s Human Trafficking Unit.  She also chaired the Alamo Area Coalition against Trafficking, a regional multi-disciplinary group of law enforcement, non-profits, government agencies, business people, and academics assembled to coordinate the fight against human trafficking. She has trained more than 15,000 people statewide on human trafficking and has testified frequently before the Texas legislature on trafficking related issues.

PROGRAM REVIEW
August 29, 2018

"Be The Inspiration"

John Hathaway
District Governor
by Chris Ayers

John Hathaway is the Governor for District 5910 and his home club is in The Woodlands.  As part of his duties in this role, John visited our club and discussed what makes a vibrant club. Illustrated with a visual metaphor of stuffed toy ‘peas in a pod.”  He stated what the three ‘P’s’ are for a growing and energetic club.

  • Participation – Members can participate in the multitude of service projects that all clubs host.  Rotarians must seek ways to get involved in the community outside of Rotary.  You are encouraged to register with myRotary.org to see what is available.  Examples include Rotary Fellowships in music, yoga, cycling and, of course, happy hours.
  • Peace – Positive peace is more than an absence of violence.  Rotarians must advocate for peace.  Peace is secured when food, clean water, education and worthwhile employment needs are met.
  • Publicize – Rotarians must publicize the good deeds that they accomplish.  We must use sources such as television, radio, and social media to inform the general public of Rotary.
