PROGRAM REVIEW
February 7, 2024

David Oates
Jefferson County Extension Agent
By Chris Ayers

David Oates is the Jefferson County Extension Agent. Extension agents are employed by both Texas A&M AgriLife and the county where they work. Their main tasks are to support anyone with a connection to agriculture and educate the public about all aspects of agriculture. David gave a fantastic speech about the local structure of extension agents and the aspects of agriculture where they specialize. This includes everything from commercial to residential and 4-H and FFA programs. Local oversight and education apply to rice and cattle production, marine issues including shrimp and oyster production, and homeowner’s problems regarding residential trees, shrubs, and insects.

David taught that recent weather patterns which includes drought, floods, freezes, saturates soils, extreme temperature changes, and wind related incidents like hurricanes effects all plants and animals and can have long term effects on agriculture sustainability and health. It was great to host David and we welcome him back anytime. For any agricultural questions you might like to ask you may contact them at (409) 835-8461 or Jefferson-tx@tamu.edu. The agency is located at 1225 Pearl St. Ste 200, Beaumont, TX 77701.
