The board approved club participation for Sleep in Heavenly Peace's Bed Delivery Day on November 19th.
The Board of Directors meets monthly and the meetings are open to all members. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 25. If you would like to attend the lunch meeting, please make a reservation in advance with the Executive Director.

WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S

Did you know that more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s?
Did you know that between 2000 and 2019, deaths from Alzheimer’s have more than doubled?
Did you know that Alzheimer’s kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined?
Did you know that Rotary is a National Sponsor of the Alzheimer’s Association?
The Alzheimer’s Dementia Rotarian Action Group has 164 teams so far from all over the country, which is continuing to increase. This year’s goal is $250,000. So far this year they have raised $213,928 and this number is growing daily.
Michele Cobb, Chair of the Rotary Club of Beaumont's participation in this community event will share information about how to join the Club's Team for the walk which will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2022.
Rotary Club of Beaumont will Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, October 8, 2022. We are looking for walkers to raise awareness and fundraisers for this year’s event which is taking place at the Great Lawn at the Event Centre in Downtown Beaumont. The event starts at 8am and the walk starts at 9am. This year there will be an option of a 1-mile walk and a 3-mile walk.
If you would like to participate but not wanting to walk, we still need your help. Since Rotary is a National Sponsor of the Alzheimer's Association, Rotary Club of Beaumont will have a booth. We need people to help with this booth and distribute information about the Rotary Club of Beaumont and what we do in the community. This is a great opportunity for us as Rotarians, to meet and possibly welcome new members we meet at this event.
The funds raised at this event will help fight Alzheimer’s disease through research, advocacy efforts, essential support programs and services in our communities.
We look forward to Rotary Club of Beaumont’s first year joining so many other clubs from around the nation.

"Raising the Bar in Education"

Stephanie Glass Flatten introduced the Green Dot School organization to the Club. Green Dot is working in partnership with Beaumont Independent School District (BISD) to “turnaround” the poor academic standing at Martin Luther King (MLK) Middle School.
Stephanie then introduced four members of the Green Dot Schools who are spearheading the effort at MLK.
Cliff Clifton, Executive Director for Green Dot Schools, explained that the vision of Green Dot works off of “A BIG IDEA”. That idea is that every child should and can attend a local school that connects them to opportunities that will help them succeed in a career or academically. Everybody should be included. The assumption that public education is for the average child really serves no individual child well. Each child learns at a different base and with different understandings. His conclusion is that there is no average child.
Green Dot has a 22-year track record of high-performance stand-alone charter and turnaround schools. This vision treats all students, leads with support for all, education equity in that all children have access to the same ideas, and turnarounds can happen.
Lindsey Cooper, Director of Human Capital, discussed the 490 students who attend MLK. The challenges are instructional quality, school culture, academic expectations and chronic absentees. Green Dot works to engage students with coaching instruction. Green Dot undergoes intensive staff training to achieve this, but they also need the engagement of the community and families. Presently, Green Dot is investing $2,000 over the state allotment by applying and receiving grants in order to offer instructional coaches and behavior interventionists.
Nancy Flores, Director of Academics, presented the goals for MLK. They want to move the academic score from F to C by the 22-23 year-end, retain 85% of their staff, growth of 85% by moving the score of 6 to 9 and close the gap at the end of 2023. This process is very detailed and COVID has intervened some, but the goal is a very realistic to become a C in this time span.
Principal Marian Williams is proud to announce that all goals in reading have been met. They will continue to work hard to bring MLK Middle School up to the level that it will give all students the opportunity to succeed in a career or academically. They are working hard in the brief window of time they have been given to “turnaround” MLK.
