Lamar University
Paul Latiolais is the Center Director for Innovation and Commercialization at Lamar University, which serves as an accelerator for emerging technology under development at the university. The center’s purpose is to bring emerging technologies out of research and prepare them for the marketplace leveraging expertise from Lamar University’s colleges of engineering, science, and the college of business.
Paul has extensive industry experience in engineering technology, business development, and product launch to Fortune 500 companies. He has initiated numerous technology products in the semiconductor/hi-tech industries and managed the lifecycle process from product development, incubation, launch, marketing, and next-generation introduction. Paul worked with technology global leaders such as Synopsys, Inc., Mentor Graphics Corporation, Schlumberger, and Northrop-Grumman across the USA.
Paul Latiolais holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University, an MBA from George Fox University (Newberg, OR), and a technology management certificate from Oregon Health Sciences University. Paul also holds the position as Director of the Ben J. Rogers Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies (IES) at Lamar University.
The presentation will provide an update on the Innovation Center (CICE) since it's arrival on Rolfe Christopher in February of this year. Topics include innovation-based startups, technology at Lamar University, partnerships, and the implementation of the entry-level workforce training program.

Liz Fredrichs, President/CEO of Better Business Bureau Serving Southeast Texas, is the newest member of the club. After working for BBB out-of-state for fifteen years, Liz and her husband returned to his home state of Texas. After years of winter snow-shoveling, Liz is enjoying the warm Texas weather, gardening, fishing, hiking, and playing golf. "From Chief's Perspective"

Rotary Speaker for August 9, 2017, was Jimmy Singletary, Chief of Police for the City of Beaumont. Chief Singletary was introduced by Rotary's own, Becky Ames, Mayor of Beaumont and CEO of Medical Center of Southeast Texas Victory Campus.
Chief Singletary became Chief of the Beaumont Police Department in 2011, and has over 40 years of law enforcement experience.
Chief Singletary opened his talk by acknowledging several members of his professional staff who were in attendance, adding that it is always an honor to speak to Rotarians. Using stats and graphs, the Chief first spoke about:
Staffing Allocation Rate:

The Chief stated that the Beaumont Police Department is a "full-service" police department, covering everything from potted plants to major crimes.
Stats and Calls:
147,646 calls for service
53,409 self-initiated contacts
24,660 offense reports
4,852 crashes
8,030 arrests
National Average Crime-Clearance Rate is 17%, while Beaumont's is 27% with detective caseloads of 24 per detective. Although crime-rates increased from 2015 to 2016, stats from 2016 to 2017 have NOT increased, which strongly indicates some significant progress.
National Violent Crime Clearance Rate is 48%, while Beaumont is at 71%. The violent crime rate is almost HALF of what it was 25 years ago.
There are numerous initiatives, trainings and programs that the Beaumont Police Department is involved in:

Intelligence Led Policing and analyst
Special Assignment Units
Cellphone and Computer Forensics
Crime Stoppers

In addition, extensive training is provided in Mental Heath related issues/incidences.
Recruitment remains a high priority, as well as Rape Defensive Training.
As he ran out of time, Chief Singletary reminded everyone to join the Department on August 26th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for "Cops and Kids" event.
