Since the moment he was named Lamar University head football coach, Mike Schultz has been in a collegiate athletics whirlwind which has included getting to know the current players and staff while recruiting some top new talent in both areas.
From a Lamar press release at the time he was hired:
A coaching veteran with 35 years of experience, including 22 in the state of Texas, Mike Schultz has served as an offensive coordinator for his previous 16 seasons on the sidelines. During that time Schultz produced some of the nation’s most prolific offenses, including 11 seasons at TCU ....
In addition to his time in Fort Worth, Schultz has served as offensive coordinator at Texas State, Middle Tennessee State and Illinois. He has also made coaching stops at Texas, New Mexico, Kansas State, Tennessee Tech and UTEP during his career. Schultz also brings a knowledge of Southland Conference football having spent time at Texas State (Southwest Texas State) in the early 90’s. During Schultz’s distinguished career, he has worked with numerous position groups, and on both sides of the ball.
“I am a Texas guy, I grew up in a football family and I love the tradition and culture of football in my home state,” said Schultz.“

WHAT'S AHEAD!
We are really looking forward to March 8, when Rotarians Denise Berry and Jay Wilson tell about the experiences they had while traveling to Nicaragua with the team of Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Tulsa. They are visiting villages and rural areas, checking on water wells provided by Rotarians through the years and determine future places to dig.
March 13-17 is World Rotaract Week, so we will celebrate mid-week, on the 15th, by hearing from the Beaumont Rotaract and the Lamar Rotaract about how they are marking the occasion and about celebrations around the globe.

The Beaumont Rotary Foundation continues to fund college scholarships for graduating high school seniors. The scholarship applications are available through the high school counselor or from the Club's website by linking here.

Join Lamar University Rotaract at the Women's Basketball game this Wednesday, March 1, at 7:00 p.m.!
The Lamar University Rotaract Club will be participating in the student organization challenge at the March 1st LU Women's Basketball game at 7:00 pm in the Montagne Center. Beaumont and Spindletop Rotarians are invited to come "get your red on" and support our university and organization. The purpose of the competition is to determine which organization is the loudest and most spirited; the 1st place winner will receive $500. More importantly, this is an exciting opportunity for the Rotary and Rotaract members to interact!
How to get tickets: Tickets can be purchased for $5, "end court" at the Athletic Ticket Office. Advance tickets can be purchase at the ticket office Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tickets can also be purchase the day of the game. The ticket office will open one (1) hour before game time (at 6 p.m. on March 1st). More information on the attached flier entitled "Basketball_Tickets."

Rotary After Hours = Fun & Fellowship!
What a great evening! A large group of Rotarians thoroughly enjoyed the evening at the Beaumont Art League gallery on Thursday, February 23. Not only was the group treated to some terrific appetizers and beverages, we were able to view some awesome work in the permanent collection as well as new pieces created by local artists. Perhaps the highlight was actually meeting one of the artists as he showed his work. Several BAL Board members joined us and assisted Board Chair and Rotarian Bridget Johnson with hosting duties. Thank you to Bridget and the Beaumont Art League for the wonderful hospitality and helping some of us learn about the BAL, a jewel of Beaumont!

Our speaker today for the T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award Program was Gerald Condon, Past President of the Rotary Club of Beaumont. Gerald was introduced by President Ted Moor.
It is easy to see how "watered-down" ethics have become so prevalent in our society today. Using poignant visuals instead of "preaching to the choir," Gerald stated that, "Our moral compass does not operate on GPS," emphasizing the "lie-ways and speed-bumps of truth."
Business Ethics:
fairness, transparency, honesty, integrity, honor .... soothing words to read, in a crazy business world. ("May we have a little soft music, Maestro?")
Code of Ethics:
the cornerstone of great beginnings, with the keen eyes and skilled hands of the Architects.
Ethics: Clients, Co-workers, Club Members, Families:
It takes a Village to raise ethics as standards.
"Who is in control of my ethics?"
It is up to each of us to remind ourselves that WE are in control over the things that we "think, say and do." We are reminded constantly by our Four-Way Test.

Following Gerald's presentation, Vice President Joe Domino took the podium to describe the T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics and the criterion used for nominating a fellow Rotarian for this honor. He said the committee had quite a challenge when faced with nomination of several very deserving candidates. He concluded by sharing some of the 2017 recipient's demonstrated ethical behaviors and contributions as he announced the recipient as Dana Timaeus.
