"OCI Methanol Plant in Beaumont"
Frank Choufoer
Business Director

Mr. Frank Choufoer, the President of Natgasoline LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of OCI N.V. and the Greenfield methanol plant to be built in Beaumont will be our speaker. Groundbreaking for the new facility occurred on March 20 and it represents the largest new investment in the history of Beaumont and the first new plant in decades. OCI estimates that the project will create 3000 construction jobs over the next three years and has committed to create 240 permanent jobs. The plant is expected to have a capacity up to 5000 metric tons per day and will be the largest methanol facility of this scale in the United States. An economic impact study estimated the ripple effect of jobs in the thousands.

Congratulations, Rotary University Graduates!
Hearty congratulations to Nikasha Myles (left) and Kathleen Alsup (right) on the milestone of earning the coveted Bachelor of Rotary Science degree which earns a Rotarian the Blue Badge as well.

The awards were presented by Dean of Rotary University, Lynn Castle, who has continued to entertain the crowd and honor the graduates with personalized poems or songs.

In case you are not aware, even long-time Rotarians can earn advanced degrees.  Is a Master or Ph.D. in Rotary Science in your future?

"Show Your Colors" for Memorial Day

Chairman Pat Anderson reports a number of new volunteers on the flag project today and another successful "Service Above Self" project.

As the RotaryGrams goes to "press" on Memorial Day, flags are still being distributed.  We will include names of all the volunteers in the next issue, but please accept thanks today.

FEED THE POLIO PIG!
You heard the recent devastating news that Polio has spread and cases have been confirmed in 10 countries.  We can't allow this dreaded disease to take control again.  Rotary Clubs around the globe are stepping up to help with additional financial resources.

One small way you can help is to donate your change and coins to the Polio Pig which will be "visiting" every meeting.  Dollar bills and your checks to The Rotary Foundation are accepted too!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The Rotary International Convention is held annually in the last three months of the fiscal year (April, May, June) at the time and place decided by the RI Board. The 2014 Convention will be in Sydney beginning next weekend, Sunday, June 1 to Wednesday, June 4, 2014.

The primary purpose of the annual convention is to inspire and inform all Rotarians at an international level, particularly incoming club presidents, governors-elect, and other incoming club and RI officers, so they will be motivated to further develop Rotary at club and district levels.

PROGRAM REVIEW

"The Role of the Press Club in Southeast Texas"

Shelly Vitanza
Press Club of Southeast Texas
by Rotarian Chris Ayers

Shelly Vitanza, Executive Vice President of Southeastexas.com, visited on behalf of the Press Club of Southeast Texas.  She is the current president of the club which represents all forms of public communication in our area.  This includes news reporting, television, radio, writing, production, public relations, advertising and social media.

The Press Club exists to help effectively disseminate information through a variety of platforms while maintaining and encouraging high standards for all involved.   The Press Club meets on the third Thursday of every month at Café Del Rio at 11:30 and everyone is invited.  Past guest speakers include Rotary members Beaumont City Manage Kyle Hayes and Police Chief Jimmy Singletary.

Each year, the Press Club awards an annual Excellence in Media and Newsmaker of the year award.  Past recipients include the Kountze cheerleaders, former Lamar basketball coach Pat Knight and former Lamar President Jimmy Simmons.

Shelly did a great job explaining how media is going more social through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and blogs.  Many young people today don’t own televisions but most own a tablet and view news through these alternative sources.

Even though sources of information change over time, the Press Club will remain steadfast in their desire to maintain high journalistic principles.  Perhaps the national media could learn something from the Press Club of Southeast Texas.
