The buffet line will open early and the meeting will begin promptly at 12:00 Noon with an abbreviated agenda so we can complete the Layettes and service projects within the hour. Bring friends to help who will enjoy doing service work with us!
Annual Service Day
"Rotary Has Heart!"
Indeed, “Rotary has heart,” and the Rotary Club of Beaumont has a BIG heart, giving time and resources in Service Above Self year round.
How appropriate that we designate a date close to Valentine’s Day as our Club Service Day, providing service to multiple projects and collectively having a BIG impact!
We have plans for several different service projects to work on and complete on Service Day. Our first priority is to assemble 150 Layette bags for women and children of Nicaragua. Everyone will have the opportunity to roll up his/her sleeves and lend a hand also to Gift of Life, Boys Haven, the American Cancer Society and the Red Cross of Southeast Texas.
Bring coworkers and friends who also believe in having fun while helping others. We need you! Don't miss it!

Request for Children of Nicaragua
Two representatives from our club, Denise Berry and Jay Wilson, will be going with the Tulsa team to Nicaragua in a few weeks to observe and learn about the multi-district water well project.
The team would like to bring gifts to the children of the area. The Tulsa delegation is bringing lots of baseballs donated by a minor league team in their city because the children love playing catch. However, they have no gloves. If you have a new or used baseball or softball glove you can donate, please bring it to Rotary before Wednesday, February 22. You can be certain it will bring a smile to a child's face in Nicaragua..

Flag Project for Presidents Day
Monday, February 20 is Presidents Day. Rotarians will be engaged in flag distribution for "Show Your Colors!"
Please plan to volunteer to help again with this project! Join with other Rotarians and friends to make sure the flags are flying for our nearly 500 subscribers.

Preparation, Response, and
Recovery from Disasters
W. Nim Kidd

Texas Emergency Management

Today's speaker was W. Nim Kidd, Division Chief of the Texas Department of Emergency Management. Mr. Kidd was flawlessly introduced by Vernon Pierce.
Chief Kidd's presentation focused on "Preparation, Response, and Recovery from Disasters." He stated that it is the mission of TDEM to assist cities, counties, and state agencies in the implementation of our individual emergency management programs.
TDEM is funded as follows:
State-funding: 5.5 million dollars
Federal funding: 19.0 million dollars
Other grants/sources: 20.0+ million dollars
The TDEM covers 254 counties - no easy task!
Chief Kidd offered a rhetorical question to Rotarians:
"How many think that a Presidential declaration of disaster-relief is based on partisanship?" Much to the surprise of everyone, he stated that the answer is, "It's all about MATH!" He went on to explain that relief is based on a pre-established threshold, determined by population/census.
Speaking more on the subject of population, the Chief stated that the biggest population influx to Texas comes from California. He further stated that population growth is expected to DOUBLE (54.4 million) by 2050.
TDEM is in Region SIX which includes:
Arkansas
Louisianna
New Mexico
Oklahoma
Texas
Texas leads the nation in the number of "presidentially-declared disaters" having had 94 in 63 years, since this process was started.
All disasters are LOCAL, and managed on a local-level. All efforts are coordinated through the awesome local leadership of Mayor Becky Ames and County Judge Jeff Branick.
