Rotary Youth Leadership Awards! (RYLA) is a program that originated with Rotary International and has subsequently been specifically designed by Rotary District 5910 for the selected student delegates. RYLA encourages servant leadership in youth by recognizing and rewarding deserving 11th grade students who are chosen to attend RYLA as an "award" for their past and present leadership and service activities. These select young people attend an all-expenses-paid camp where they are inspired by a diverse group of exceptional speakers, make life-long friends through fellowship activities, and discuss the ethical and social issues of today. These activities are conducted in an atmosphere of trust and respect. The result is that these students return to their schools and communities motivated to take on additional leadership roles and to find additional ways to serve.
RYLA's intent is to encourage students to be more effective servant leaders. RYLA is not a camp intended to teach leadership skills (it is assumed that the students in attendance already possess those skills), however the following topics naturally arise in the course of RYLA activities and discussions:
~ Fundamentals of leadership
~ Ethics of positive leadership
~ Qualities of a "servant leader"
~ Importance of communication skills in effective leadership
~ Conflict management and problem-solving
~ Building self-esteem and self confidence
~ Elements of community and global citizenship Rotary's purpose of service to the community and world.
Michael Perez, member of the Rotary Club of Beaumont, is the District 5910 Chair. Jim Baxter has chaired the RYLA project for the Club this year. Together, they will report on the 2017 RYLA and will show a number of photos provided by Tim Sudela.

January 25: Rotary Goes to Work!
Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.
In the initial years of the organization, Rotarians learned about one another and the various, diverse professions of the members by meeting in the offices, factories, businesses and firms of the club members. How about doing as one of the original members did back in the early 1900s?

"ExxonMobil's Expansion in Beaumont"

With 20 years’ experience at ExxonMobil, Vince Yuskiewicz is in Beaumont for the first time as Project Executive of the expansion of the Polyethylene plant on Highway 90. The planning for this expansion began in 2010 and the project will be completed sometime in 2021.
The expansion reflects the drive for global energy due to four major factors:
The population growth and urbanization of all people and the growth of the middle class.
The fact that societies are modernizing and advanced “utilities” are needed.
Expectations of living longer are growing.
Global economies are growing at about 3% a year.
With those conditions, the GDP for chemicals is outgrowing energy today. The drivers of creating polyethylene (plastic films) are the need to keep food fresh longer, keep shipping containers secure and the actual growth of food for the future.
The total investment coming to the US is projected to be around 16 billion dollars. In Texas, Beaumont, Baytown, and Mont Belvieu will all increase production of polyethylene. In Beaumont, the plant size will be increased by about 65% with 40 full-time employees being added upon completion.
