Judge Mark Davidson served as Judge of the 11th District Court for twenty years before his retirement in 2009. He is now serving as the Multi-District Litigation Judge for all asbestos cases in the State of Texas. In that role, he has judicial duties over the 85,000 asbestos cases pending throughout the state.
While serving as a district judge, he tried over 450 jury trials and cut the backlog in the 11th District Court by 70 percent. In 1993, he was named "Trial Judge of the Year" by the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists. From 2002 through 2007, he served as Administrative Judge of Harris County.
One of Judge Davidson's hobbies is scouring District Court records of East Texas Courts and discovering the intriguing bits of historical information they contain. He will share some of his "good, bad and odd" findings with us. Come prepared to be surprised and entertained!
Sign up to take part in "Rotary Goes to School"! Instead of the normal lunch meeting, Rotarians will visit classrooms around Beaumont and distribute a special book to every first grade student. Come take part!
To sign up for the school you would like to visit, click on this link: "ROTARY GOES TO SCHOOL"
For all schools, the volunteers should arrive by Noon. Bring a photo id in order to clear a security check if needed. You will be given your Dr. Seuss hat and escorted to the classroom where you will find the books for the children.
As host club, we hope to have good representation. Please register to attend some or all of the Conference.
General schedule:
Friday, May 1 - Pre-Conference activities and tours will start at 1:00 p.m. Sign up for the "Shoot Down Polio!" Clay Shoot with proceeds to benefit the End Polio effort, or tours of local museums and attractions. We flip the switch for the official conference opening at the Beaumont Rotary Centennial Playground; then at dinner in the adjacent Beaumont Event Centre the spotlight will shine on district clubs for the Governor's Spotlight Awards.
Saturday, May 2 - The day will be full of presentations and collaborations about the good work being done across the District. There will be time to exchange ideas and share new plans. In the evening, the spotlight will focus on the District leadership at the traditional Governor's Dinner. We have some "top brass" showing up for the "top brass!" (Click on the attachment below for a sneak preview.) You don't want to miss this!
Sunday, May 3 - The spotlight will turn this morning to light up the great work being done by Rotarians collectively through the Rotary Foundation. You will be moved, motivated, and inspired. Plan to be here until around 11:00 a.m. when the lights will go dim on the 2015 Conference, but participants take the glow back to their respective clubs to continue to "Light Up Rotary!" across District 5910.
The 2015 District 5910 Conference is fast approaching and the committee in your Rotary club is working hard to insure that this event is as grand as it can be!
To put on such an event in the style that our Club does, with amazing food, fun and entertainment, we are asking for your assistance with financial support. We have designed various sponsorship packages which will, in turn, benefit your business with advertising to several local clubs in our area and those in other parts of the district as well. (Click on the image below to enlarge and view the package details.)
We believe the “Spotlight on District 5910" conference will be a huge success and we want you to be a part. Please consider becoming a sponsor by choosing one of the packages and become a sponsor to help us "Light Up Rotary" and District 5910 even brighter!
Phone me for more details or send your financial support along with your business logo to the Rotary office.
President Elect Pat Anderson is facing a tough decision and needs your help. Will our Club commit to hosting an exchange student in 2015-16 and provide this great learning opportunity for a young person or not?
It is one of the ultimate opportunities to "build goodwill" that a Rotary Club can do, and we understand the once-in-a-lifetime learning experience it is for the student, the friends he/she makes when in the USA, and the wonderful experience it is for a family to host the young man or woman. Yet, it is sometimes difficult to secure 3 families who are willing to host, making an incoming President reticent to sign the commitment form.
Are you willing to open your home to a visiting student in the 2015-16 school year? Do you know another family who would enjoy this opportunity? The host families do not need to include a Rotarian to serve as a host.
Please give this careful consideration. We need to secure a commitment from three host families right away. For more information, please phone the Committee's current co-Chairman Lum Edwards, III, at 832-7736 ext. 132. If you and your family are ready to agree to this wonderful experience, talk with Pat Anderson or phone the Rotary Office at 409-842-1913.

The group will work on a Service Project on Saturday, March 14th at the Southeast Texas Food Bank. Join them at 8:15 a.m.

The local Interact Clubs - West Brook, Kelly, Vidor and Orangefield - are joining together to do a project for children. They plan to put together some "candy tubes" and need paper tubes and individually wrapped hard or chewy candies (not chocolate).
Please save paper tubes from paper towels, toilet paper or gift wrapping paper and bring to a Rotary meeting before March 18. Your candy donation will help too and will be gratefully accepted.
Joe Tortorice loves Beaumont. Jason’s Deli started in Beaumont 47 years ago when his father decided to start a small sandwich shop in his laundromat. In 1976 the first store opened in Gateway and the rest is history. Forty-seven years later, there are 65 million customers in 125 cities in 29 states. Joe thanks his father and Ben Rogers for being the visionaries who assisted the Jason’s phenomenon to grow.
In 1995, Joe attended a lecture at Texas A&M by David Glass who spoke about seeking mystical strength in the culture of his company. Joe found the secret to be the concept of “servant leadership.” That concept, which he wholeheartedly adapted, led him to develop 214 successful stores between 1995 and 2015. Jason’s, founded on high quality food, quality service, and a joyful workplace, has been a success because everyone who works there understands they are an important part of the team. Training is essential to prepare employees to perform to the high standards of Jason’s leadership.
There are seven pillars to servant leadership:
Patience;
Kindness: which involves communication by managers with every employee in the store (Joe offers “daily bread” comments every morning to start the day);
Humility: Do nothing out of selfish ambition;
Respect: Respect everyone; employees and customers, and listen to what people have to say;
Generosity – selflessness (care about others);
Commitment to a growth mindset (Pillars of growth are spirituality, intellectualism, relational, physical)
Sponsor ads appear on the website continuously and are included in the sidebar of the RotaryGrams each week. One will be spotlighted weekly to express our appreciation.
