Looking for Hosts for Rotary Goes Home!
September 18-22 will be Rotary Goes Home meetings!

Rotary Goes Home, the popular fun event where the weekly Rotary meeting is moved to Rotarian homes, will take place September 18-22 in place of the Rotary meeting on September 20.  This traditional event is always a great fellowship experience, getting to know fellow Rotarians in a completely different setting.

We are seeking hosts for one of these fun events. Hosts can decide how many Rotarians can be accommodated at your meeting, and if you would like to have a breakfast, lunch, or dinner meeting.  You can decide what you would like to serve.  (If cost is a factor, Rotarians will be agreeable to paying for food, just as they would if eating at a weekly meeting at the Eleganté.  We will let people know ahead of time so you can collect upon arrival.)

Call Scott Hatcher (409-284-4119) or Michael Perez (210-710-2183) to let us know you can host and give us all the details.  If you have already volunteered, please phone the office or email with the details so we can begin to sign up guests.  We need to know day of the week, time of the day, how many guests you are able to host, and any other details. We'll take it from there and send you an rsvp list in plenty of time to make your preparations.

PROGRAM REVIEW
August 23, 2017

"Rotary District 5910: Making a Difference"
Rhonda Herrington
Rotary District 5910 Governor
by John Neely

Our speaker today, August 23rd, was Rhonda Herrington, Rotary District 5910 Governor.  Ms. Herrington was introduced by Past President and District Assistant Governor, Becky Mason.

Becky described Rhonda’s enthusiasm for Rotary and Rotary projects as the " Energizer Bunny,” as she listed Ms. Herrington's public service record, and just SOME of her accomplishments. Rhonda has been an educator and administrator for over 38 years, starting in Houston, blazing trails in west Texas, and settling in Palestine, Texas.

Ms. Herrington stated "I can't always tell what brings an individual into Rotary as a member, but I always know that it's because they feel the need to be of service."

Ms. Herrington stated that she often thinks of Rotary's “Service Above Self” and wonders, "How can we improve our involvement, in community, District, and International projects?" As she mentioned water wells and polio, she stated that as long as there is just one case of polio or the need for clean water, Rotarians will not rest."

Rhonda recounted a meeting with a student attending RYLA shared that "as a child, (the student) received a dose of the polio vaccine, and now, as a Rotaracter, she was involved in the administration of the vaccine."  That is a powerful testimony of our legacy.

Rhonda stated that after being chauffeured for the eight years of his Presidency, George Bush and Laura were eager to do some traveling that was unencumbered by chauffeurs. During one trip, it has been said that George and Laura pulled into a gas station in a small Texas town, where Laura recognized the attendant as someone she had dated years before. When she told this to George, he asked, “What do you think the attendant's life would have been like if the two of you had stayed together?"  Laura replied, "That's an easy one…HE would have been President."  Yes, behind every great man, is a great woman!

Ms. Herrington shared an experience that occurred not long ago: "as I was heading to San Diego, for mandatory training for District Governor, Jack (her partner) was experiencing some medical issues (pneumonia) and was admitted to the hospital in Palestine. For the next three months, Jack would be in and out of the hospital.....but Rotary did NOT miss a beat. Rotary sent a trainer to her home so Rhonda could complete her training in order to serve her term as District Governor.  She further stated, "That kind of fellowship and support confirmed that we (Rotarians) are family, and we live the Four Way Test with each other."

Ms. Herrington said that she loved a quote from a fellow Rotarian, Mike Thomas, that goes to the heart of what we Rotarians do.  She told him she would always give him the credit for the quote,  “If you want to know anything about polio, ask a Rotarian.  If you don't know about polio, thank a Rotarian."
