Dr. Shannon Allen is the superintendent of the Beaumont Independent School District. She made history on April 17, 2019, by being named the first female superintendent in the district. A Beaumont native and a graduate of BISD, Dr. Allen is uniquely qualified to serve the community as the district's leader through her background and work experience of 23 years at BISD. Over the years, her passion and commitment to the students in the district and the entire community has continued to increase. She earned her bachelor of science in biology with a minor in chemistry from Prairie View A&M University and obtained her master’s and doctoral degrees in education from Lamar University.

Welcome to our new Executive Director, MiKayla Bourque! MiKayla joined us on August 22, 2022. She is eager to get to know everyone and to learn more about Rotary.
MiKayla is a former teacher of 10 years at BISD with a bachelor's degree in Music Education from McNeese State University and a master's degree in Digital Leading and Learning from Lamar University. She is a proud mother of a 6-year old son, Benson. She is grateful for the warm welcome and exciting opportunity to serve such an admired and respected Rotary Club.

Meal Packing Event to Benefit the Bishop Comboni High School and the Providence Vocational School in Uganda
The Rotary Club of Beaumont will be joining forces with St. Anne Church, Kids Around the World, and the Richard Gagné Charitable Foundation as they are very happy to announce a “Meal-Packaging” Project scheduled for Saturday, September 17, 2022 to benefit the children of The Bishop Comboni High School and the Providence Vocational School in Uganda.
The benefit will be held at the St. Anne Catholic Church gym located at 2715 Calder Ave, Beaumont, TX 77702. Volunteers are needed to help pack the meals which will then be shipped to the school for orphans in Uganda.
VOLUNTEERS MUST BE 18 YEARS OR OLDER.

The Alzheimer’s Dementia Rotarian Action Group has 137 teams so far from all over the country, which is continuing to increase. This year’s goal is $250,000 so far this year they have raised $75,000 and this number is growing daily.
Michele Cobb, Chair of the Rotary Club of Beaumont's participation in this community event will share information about how to join the Club's Team for the walk which will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2022.
Rotary Club of Beaumont will Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, October 8, 2022. We are looking for walkers to raise awareness and fundraisers for this year’s event which is taking place at the Great Lawn at the Event Center in Downtown Beaumont. The event starts at 8am and the walk starts at 9am. This year there will be an option of a 1-mile walk and a 3-mile walk.
If you would like to participate but not wanting to walk, we still need your help. Since Rotary is a National Sponsor of the Alzheimer's Association, Rotary Club of Beaumont will have a booth. We need people to help with this booth and distribute information about the Rotary Club of Beaumont and what we do in the community. This is a great opportunity for us as Rotarians, to meet and possibly welcome new members we meet at this event.
The funds raised at this event will help fight Alzheimer’s disease through research, advocacy efforts, essential support programs and services in our communities.
We look forward to Rotary Club of Beaumont’s first year joining so many other clubs from around the nation.

Rotary After Hours Recap
The 1st Rotary After Hours of the year, hosted by Hancock Whitney, was a great success. We had a total of 40 attendees who joined us to enjoy the evening playing Split-the-Pot, socializing, networking, eating appetizers and drinking beverages. Thank you to those who helped with setup, the sign in and clean up. Uliana Trylowsky won the grand prize, a cooler donated by Hancock Whitney.
We thank the Hancock Whitney team which graciously hosted this event for us.
Our next committee meeting is this Tuesday evening at 5:30-6:30 at Madison's. We will need to discuss the next RAH which is scheduled for September 22nd.
During the last board meeting, the above letter was read by Arne Almquist (Rotary Secretary). The dedication and commitment shown at the Beep Baseball event was noticed beyond our local club and community. Thank you for your "service above self."

"Leading by Example"

Sheriff Stephens gave Rotarians a look at the “other” side of cops. Most people think of criminal justice personnel as cops but there are many other aspects to the sheriff’s officers. COVID definitely had an impact on the sheriff’s office and its budget. The last time she spoke to our club she discussed mental health detectives. Besides dealing with mental health issues and crime, the officers are first responders to disasters and they work with other agencies to rehabilitate prisoners.
When COVID first hit Beaumont, her office was designated to locate a woman who tested positive and contain her by quarantine. There were no protocols at the time. They located the person in a hotel on 11th Street and eventually locked her in a room so she could not spread the disease. The hotel operator did not appreciate this use of the hotel and she was removed to her home which had no water or electricity. Two officers were posted on 24-hour duty to keep her in the house. They had to feed her and try and make her comfortable with whatever medication would help. All prisoners have the right to food, clothing and medical care.
It took 3 months for protocols to be determined for COVID. It was decided to keep criminals in designated dorm areas. The problem was that there were many ways that the prisoners had to be separated: by sex, by type of offense, by age and violent versus non-violent. This was a challenging time for the prisons, both prisoners and staff when no family or attorneys were allowed to visit. There was no way to actually protect the staff who worked with the prisoners day in and out. These staff members were managing people’s lives in ways they never knew they would with the possibility of becoming ill while working.
The county ran out of room as there was no state space available and there were 800 prisoners in pre-trial phase. 90 of those were awaiting a murder trial. All budgets related to the care of prisoners (food, medical, clothing, etc.) were overrun. There were workers who died in their capacity as guards and their families have not been awarded line of duty death benefits at this time, although the sheriff is leading the way in getting the legislation in place. These people who work in jail are heroes and they are keeping the rest of us safe.
Sheriff Stephens speech made members aware of the many things people in the criminal justice system deal with on a daily basis. They are a part of the system that keeps the rest of us safe every day.
