Wine Down With Rotary in Second Year!
GET READY! The second annual "Wine Down With Rotary" fundraiser is already eagerly anticipated! The date is October 6 and tickets will be on sale soon. Spread the word to friends and co-workers that it will be another great/not-to-be-missed event!
This year, the event will celebrate the Centennial of The Rotary Foundation and recognize the good works of Rotary through the 100 years of the Foundation.

Interact Clubs
Prepare for
New Year!
While we think of the traditional "new year" as January 1, we have become accustomed to the "Rotary year" beginning on July 1. However, the "Interact year" is different from either of those. The Interact year begins with the return of high school students to class at their respective schools. Let's celebrate with them because for the Interact Clubs at West Brook and Monsignor Kelly, it is a new year!
On Saturday, August 13, the Interact Clubs sponsored by the Rotary Club of Beaumont will join with many others for a day-long training workshop at Lone Star College - Montgomery. Members of our club will be traveling along with them if possible too. We wish them a beneficial day that will help kick the new year off!

August 30-September 1 will be Rotary Goes Home meetings!
Rotary Goes Home, the popular fun event where the weekly Rotary meeting is moved to Rotarian homes, will take place August 30-September 1 in place of the Rotary meeting on August 31.
We have some very gracious members who have volunteered and are hosting some fun events! Thank you to Bobbie Applegate, Joanne Brown, Scott Hatcher, Leonard Juncker, Sharen Kirksey, Becky Mason, Chuck Mason, Ted Moor, and Bel Morian for your gracious hospitality. We are looking forward to it!

Congratulations to Jim Malain, the newest Blue Badge in the Club! After a fun group rendition of a special song to the tune "This Little Light of Mine," Jim was happy to receive his Bachelor of Rotary Science degree from Dean Lynn Castle.

In the News: Club Featured in Regional Magazine
The July-August publication of Good Grit magazine, "Wanderlust" is one you need to see! If you love beautiful pictures and stories about the South, this magazine is one you should take a look at. Moreover, described as "The Character of the South," this issue contains a double-page spread about the Beaumont, Texas Rotary Club! The article starts with a little bit of history and goes on to tell about the Centennial Playground, our flag project and more.
You might wonder, as I did, how in the world a beautiful publication, based in Birmingham, Alabama (where there is a very large, dynamic Rotary Club) would find and focus such a nice feature on the Rotary Club of Beaumont! Credit and thanks go to Allan Higgins, whose son-in-law, Peyton Chandler, is on the publication's staff and wrote the article. Our thanks to both Allan and Peyton!

Mike Vaughan’s division differentiates itself from the company that most of us regard as Entergy. He deals with companies in several states and works in the area of transmission resilience for the company. Three major areas encompass this division: Investment, Cyber and Physical Security and Preparation.
In this division, workers have had 508 days without an OSHA injury and they credit that to job hazard analysis, human performance tools, safety first top to bottom, training, tools and equipment and the concept of brother’s keeper.
The Investment area of the division is set to spend $2 billion dollars in the next 6 years for new and improved substations with major construction. They will spend $150 million changing out equipment and increasing technology. The plan is to ease congestion in the lines and be able to better plan for additional needs to the community, residential and business, and the future.
Cyber security deals with the new technology of today which can assist in calculating needs for voltage currently and to calculate times when that need will increase or decrease. Old systems were “electro engineered” while today’s technology is mainly computer which brings in a whole different set of problems and increased firewalls and other systems to detect issues. NERC regulations have been developed by the government and companies are audited on their processing. Physical security deals with terrorist threats to the grid.
Preparation is the last and a very important concern for the division. This would include dealing with hurricanes, flooding and other weather related problems. The division calculates areas that will be impacted by the system and reacts so that the system is safely set off line but pumps keep running. During the Newton floods, the Hartburg Facility was taken off line before any damage could be done to the substation but kept pumps running so that the facility could be reopened at the first opportunity available.
