THERE WILL NOT BE MEETING AT THE MCMELEGANTE THIS WEEK.
PROGRAM PREVIEW
March 25, 2015
ROTARY GOES TO SCHOOL
Take part in "Rotary Goes to School!" Instead of the normal lunch meeting, Rotarians will visit classrooms all across Beaumont and distribute a special book to every first grade student. Come take part!
We still have a few remaining classrooms that do not have a reader. There is still a place for you! To sign up for the school you would like to visit, click on this link: "ROTARY GOES TO SCHOOL"
For all schools, volunteers should arrive by Noon. Bring a photo id in order to clear a security check if needed. You will be given your Dr. Seuss hat and escorted to the classroom where you will find the books for the children.
Take the Dr. Seuss hat with you and bring it to the meeting on April 1 so we can take one large group picture.

President Elect Pat Anderson is facing a tough decision and needs your help. Will our Club commit to hosting an exchange student in 2015-16 and provide this great learning opportunity for a young person or not? For the past 19 years, the Rotary Club of Beaumont has hosted a student, but unless we secure commitments of host families, we will have to decline taking part in 2015-16.
It is one of the ultimate opportunities to "build goodwill" that a Rotary Club can do, and we understand the once-in-a-lifetime learning experience it is for the student, the friends he/she makes when in the USA, and the wonderful experience it is for a family to host the young man or woman. Yet, it is sometimes difficult to secure 3 families who are willing to host, making an incoming President reticent to sign the commitment form.
Are you willing to open your home to a visiting student in the 2015-16 school year? Do you know another family who would enjoy this opportunity? The host families do not need to include a Rotarian to serve as a host.
Please give this careful consideration. We need to secure a commitment from three host families right away. For more information, please talk with Pat Anderson or phone the Rotary Office at 409-842-1913 no later than noon on Tuesday, March 24.
As host club, we hope to have good representation. Please register to attend some or all of the Conference.
General schedule:
Friday, May 1 - Pre-Conference activities and tours will start at 1:00 p.m. Sign up for the "Shoot Down Polio!" Clay Shoot with proceeds to benefit the End Polio effort, or tours of local museums and attractions. We flip the switch for the official conference opening at the Beaumont Rotary Centennial Playground; then at dinner in the adjacent Beaumont Event Centre the spotlight will shine on district clubs for the Governor's Spotlight Awards.
Saturday, May 2 - The day will be full of presentations and collaborations about the good work being done across the District. There will be time to exchange ideas and share new plans. In the evening, the spotlight will focus on the District leadership at the traditional Governor's Dinner. We have some "top brass" showing up for the "top brass!" (Click on the attachment below for a sneak preview.) You don't want to miss this!
Sunday, May 3 - The spotlight will turn this morning to light up the great work being done by Rotarians collectively through the Rotary Foundation. You will be moved, motivated, and inspired. Plan to be here until around 11:00 a.m. when the lights will go dim on the 2015 Conference, but participants take the glow back to their respective clubs to continue to "Light Up Rotary!" across District 5910.
The 2015 District 5910 Conference is fast approaching and the committee in your Rotary club is working hard to insure that this event is as grand as it can be!
To put on such an event in the style that our Club does, with amazing food, fun and entertainment, we are asking for your assistance with financial support. We have designed various sponsorship packages which will, in turn, benefit your business with advertising to several local clubs in our area and those in other parts of the district as well. Look at the map below and you can easily see the large area and number of clubs in District 5910.
We believe the “Spotlight on District 5910" conference will be a huge success and we want you to be a part. Please consider becoming a sponsor by choosing one of the packages and become a sponsor to help us "Light Up Rotary" and District 5910 even brighter!
Phone me for more details or send your financial support along with your business logo to the Rotary office.
The newest graduate of Rotary University with a Bachelor of Rotary Science and a Blue Badge is Dana Timaeus! After a rousing sing-a-long of "God Bless our Rotary!", President Vernon Pierce (left) congratulates Dana while Dean Lynn Castle (right) confers the degree. Congratulations, Dana!
In case you are not aware, even long-time Rotarians can earn advanced degrees. Who will be the first in a long while to earn a Master or Ph.D. in Rotary Science?
Open to all Rotarians, the District Assembly is designed to give clubs and their respective leadership teams a jump-start on the upcoming Rotary year. There are multiple break-out sections, so we encourage clubs to send as many members as possible to ensure that your club has the information and training to make the 2015-16 Rotary year successful. Read through the schedule by linking to it here.
Plan to attend Saturday, April 11, 2015 in Montgomery, Texas.
Visit the District webpage and link to the registration through the event link/date. If you need assistance with registration or more information, contact the Rotary Office. We can arrange carpooling for Rotarians attending.
Billy Greer, Supervisory Marine Surveyor of the Beaumont Ship Operating Office, presented members with a look at how the Beaumont office has progressed since 1946 until today. Greer manages daily operations for the Merchant Marines overseeing the National Defense Ready Reserve Fleet and Reserve Fleet, 2 school ships and special project administration.
Beaumont became an operational office after the Neches River navigation was dredged and rechanneled with a 2.28 million dollar program that began in 1946. The Fleet was pressed into service during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and the Berlin Crisis.
In 1976, the Ready Reserve Fleet was established in order to be able to utilize necessary ships more quickly. Desert Storm was the first time the Fleet was activated. The Fleet can be assembled and be ready to go within a ten-day period. Since Desert Storm, the Fleet has seen action for various reasons in Somalia, Haiti and Bosnia. The Cape Fear was utilized to remove chemical weapons from Syria. During Iraqi Freedom, 120 ships were utilized. The Fleet has many different types of ships: tankers, cranes, loaders’ equipment, floating barge, and ships able to carry 600 marines.
Special Projects include disaster relief, containerized ammunition, and patrol boats. The Beaumont Layberth Facility is being built to accommodate 8 large ships and in 8 years the project will pay for itself by not having to use commercial storage for these ships. The ships will also be more readily available to use.
The Beaumont office is also working with the Corps of Engineers on a barge storage project that will enable ships to float a barge underneath. Other Special Projects included Operation United Assistance in Liberia, Hurricane Rita and Ike when emergency vehicles were stored on the ships in port.
The school ship program provides training for the FBI, Coast Guard and other emergency area.
The program gave members a good picture of the fleet and the services of the fleet in Beaumont.
Sponsor ads appear on the website continuously and are included in the sidebar of the RotaryGrams each week. One is spotlighted weekly to express our appreciation.
