Tom Bell
Executive Director
Beaumont Main Street
by Kara Timberlake
Beaumont Main Street's Executive Director Tom Bell’s interest in local historical preservation and the immediate need to save and secure downtown historic properties led him to become one of the original founders of the nonprofit organization.
What started off as the Central City Development Corporation in the 70s became BUILD (Beaumont Urban Improvement Leadership for Downtown), Inc. in 1985 and a 501(c)(3) status was obtained.
In 1991, Beaumont applied for Main Street designation from the Texas Historical Commission and the National Trust. After the designation was approved, Beaumont Main Street began the work of revitalizing the Beaumont Commercial District, a National Register District.
A combination of talent and passion for public relations led Tom Bell to a successful career in marketing and advertising. His early career included Art Director at Leo Burnet Advertising in Chicago and at Aylin Advertising, the fourth largest ad agency in Texas. Tom opened Thomas S. Bell Advertising and Design in 1977, and is a successful businessman, accomplished designer, artist, entrepreneur and community supporter.
Since 2011, Tom has worked full-time for Beaumont Main Street, Southeast Texas’ only organization officially affiliated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Texas Historical Commission.
Beaumont Main Street is also a member of Main Street America, Texas Downtown Association, and Texas Main Street.
Main Streets in the United States have contributed $5.7 billion to the cities they're located in. Over $238 million has been reinvested in downtown Beaumont via Beaumont Main Street. The organization, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in May, works with the city of Beaumont and partners to foster relationships with investors and promote the assets of the downtown district.
The organization offers student field trips, historical walking tours, and hosts the award-winning festival, Dogtoberfest. The event, held the second Saturday in October, allows the community to enjoy dog-friendly activities and to celebrate fall in historic downtown.
