A relative newcomer to Beaumont, Bill Allen took the helm of the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce in the fall of 2018. He quickly settled into the city and his job, and got down to the business of immersing himself in the mission and goals of the Chamber and the busy schedule of projects and events.

The Rotary Club of Beaumont happily welcomed Bill to membership in September 2018 and we are eager to hear from him about the work of the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, "Your Chamber" and his vision for the new year.

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

In the initial years of the organization, Rotarians learned about one another and the various diverse professions of the members by meeting in the offices, factories, businesses and firms of the club members. How about doing as one of the original members did back in the early 1900s?

FEBRUARY 13: Club Service Day

Indeed, “Rotary has heart,” and the Rotary Club of Beaumont has a BIG heart, giving time and resources in Service Above Self year round. How appropriate that we designate a date close to Valentine’s Day as our Club Service Day, providing hands-on service to multiple projects and collectively having a BIG impact!

We have plans for several different hands-on service projects to work on and possibly complete on Service Day. The first priority is to assemble 150 Layette bags for women and children of Nicaragua. Everyone will have the opportunity to roll up his/her sleeves and lend a hand to this project, funded in part with a grant from District 5910.

If you sit on a board or work with an agency in Beaumont that has a need for help with a hands-on project to be done that day, please contact Joy Walker or the Rotary office to learn what will be needed to be included. Joy can be reached at revjoywalker@aol.com or 1-318-426-6136.

Plan now to bring co-workers and friends with you to the meeting on February 13 as the more hands and hearts we have working together, the more we will be able to accomplish on this day of service!

BEAUMONT HIGH SCHOOL INTERACT INSTALLED

Rotarians prepared and conducted the official installation of the Beaumont United High School Interact Club on Thursday, January 17. While the Interact Club was officially approved by Rotary International in August of 2018, Club leaders were pleased to have a special event to mark the occasion properly.

President Lynn Castle led the brief ceremony and was joined by the BU Interact President Gerald Jones to personally present a certificate to each student inducted. BU Interact Club sponsors Cindy Cherry and Sheree Pierce were present also and assisted in making the event one to remember.

"Camp RYLA: Fun and Educational"

Our speaker/program today was "RYLA : Be The Inspiration!" Randy Shelton, our Club's Chair for RYLA, opened the meeting and then introduced District 5910 RYLA Chair Michael Perez who provided more details related to Camp RYLA which was held this past weekend. RYLA stands for the "Rotary Youth Leadership Awards."

Randy stated that Rotary Club of Beaumont sponsors 16 of the 288 High School Junior participants. Our delegation comes from Monsignor Kelly, Beaumont United High School, and West Brook High School.

Michael informed Rotarians that there is a RYLA connected to every Rotary District in the world. He further stated that each RYLA experience "looks different." Michael went on to state that the budget for District 5910 RYLA is $60,000.

The RYLA Camp Weekend was filled with events and activities designed to bring out the very best in our youth. These are opportunities for high school juniors to discover and to develop leadership characteristics of which they may not have been aware. The activities help the participants become more familiar with ethics, personal development, group development, and problem-solving.

During these activities, participants had the opportunity to hear about some of Rotary's general issues and programs like the Four Way Test, the End Polio Campaign, and our Youth Exchange Program.

Three of the RYLA participants were asked to share a few remarks related to their experience:

"I want to be able to help my community and make a difference."

"I made a lot of friends and figured out how to enlist the vision and skills of others in order to to accomplish a task."

"We learned about creativity, trust and problem-solving and how to work as a team."

McKenna Cross and Cameron Simpson were participants this year and selected to be a counselor next year. Gerald Jones served as a counselor this year. He received a $1,000 scholarship and was selected to return next year as a counselor instructor.

Randy thanked the many Rotarians, parents, and teachers who assisted on any level, for the success of RYLA 2019. He expressed special thanks to Rotarian Roger Bemis for providing the Monsignor Kelly High School bus for transportation.

In closing today's program, the RYLA participants came together to sing and show their version of "Hey, Joe!" ♪♪♪ It was fun and entertaining!
