The T. Kelsey Lamb Award for Business Ethics is "presented annually to a Beaumont Rotarian who consistently exhibits the highest ethical standards represented by the Rotary Four-Way Test in his or her chosen vocation." The 2021 recipient of this prestigious honor is Randy Shelton.

Though the response of the meeting attendees was muted on the Zoom call, from the motioned applause, the approving nods, and the enthusiastic smiles of all in attendance, it was clear that there is overwhelming agreement with the decision to bestow this honor on Randy for demonstrated ethics in his work as Judge of the 279th District Court, the leadership and contributions he has made to our club and in other volunteer roles he holds in the community-at-large. One Rotarian commented that in his work, one can always count on Judge Randy Shelton to be fair and consistent when rendering his judgements.

Volunteers are needed to help at the Beaumont Health Department, 3040 College St., with COVID vaccine distributions. They can use volunteers to assist the medical staff with the lines at check-in, walking patients to the assigned stations and those sort of tasks. (You won't be asked to do medical tasks that you aren't qualified to do!). Add your name to the volunteer list and indicate a good phone number. An administrator from the BHD will phone you and schedule a date and time that is convenient for you. At the current time, they are administering the vaccine on Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. They may extend to weekends as more and more vaccine becomes available.

Saturday, February 27 was a great day of Rotary service around the community! We are grateful to those Rotarians who were comfortable with being "out-and-about" in the community and able to give of their time with a selfless heart of service to one of three opportunities!

Rotarian John Rollins lends a hand collecting food and other donations at Walmart for Southeast Texas Food Bank.

Three Rotarians - Shelly Vitanza, Deborah Drago and Jennifer Gregory - enjoyed being outside volunteering at the Beautify Beaumont Tree Give-away on Saturday.

They told people about the trees and helped bring the 3-gallon potted trees to vehicles.

And, Rotarians were again called to help at Sleep in Heavenly Peace, delivering beds to children in Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange. These youngsters have been sleeping on the floor or in a chair.

The deliveries include assembling the bed, adding the mattress, sheets, pillow and comforter, and watching for the smiles as the child realizes it is his/her bed now! What a gift, and what a rewarding experience to be able to deliver something so important!

Thank you to Pat Anderson Cindy Cherry, John Lee, Sheree Pierce, Terri Potter (and Lee), and Kevin Reed, especially to all who went "the extra mile." There are lots more photos of this project in an album. You will enjoy each one so link HERE.

The tally board at Sleep in Heavenly Peace says they have 58 children needing beds and has another build-day scheduled for March 13. Who wants to volunteer?

"On Ethics & Integrity"

Jim is the Past District Governor of Rotary District 5450 in Colorado and the owner of Halderman & Associates. He began his talk by comparing ethics to a compass. Jim said that just as a compass has to be adjusted to determine true north, we have to make adjustments to our personal compass periodically to make certain we are staying true to our ethics. He told the story of when he was much younger and had to make an ethical decision when presented with an opportunity to make additional profit if he was willing to inflate some estimates for insurance purposes. He said part of him wanted to go along, but he heard himself turning the offer down. The better part of him wanted to keep his integrity intact.

Jim said ethics is a system of moral principles. Those principles are influenced by religion, culture, philosophy, intuition, political power, psychology, and laws. This is why systems of ethics may vary in different societies. He said that as an ombudsman for Rotary, he has seen people on both sides accuse the other of not adhering to the 4-Way Test. He said we should never use the 4-Way Test as a badge of honor or as a way to hide from the truth. We must measure our values and our actions and see if they are truly in alignment. Our actions are what show the world what are our true values.

He spoke about the intricate relationship between the obligation and the outcome, and how that relates to the 4-Way Test. He said that if we become more comfortable with ourselves and belief in our core values, our stress lessens. We begin to see that every criticism, judgement, or word said in anger comes from an unfulfilled need. As we seek to understand that, we become happier with ourselves.

This also works in business, as businesses with proven ethics are able to increase revenue through repeat customers. Those businesses will also have happier and more loyal employees who have pride in the place they work and what their company stands for.

Jim said it will help us if we eliminate negative influences in our lives and orientate our compass toward the truth. We will be happier and less stressed if we do.
