The Rotary Club of Beaumont, TX, is a large and diverse fellowship of inspired business, professional, and civic leaders with significant community connections that foster the ideals of Service Above Self and high ethical standards.
Representative Dade Phelan of Beaumont is a commercial real estate developer and licensed broker in Southeast Texas. His fourth generation firm owns and manages retail, industrial and office property in Texas and Arkansas. He received his bachelor’s degree in Government and Business from The University of Texas at Austin.
Phelan serves as Vice-Chair of the Natural Resources Committee as well as on the Calendars Committee, Appropriations Committee, Appropriations Sub-Committee on Articles VI, VII & VIII and on the Select Committee on Ports, Innovation and Infrastructure.
Capitol Inside Magazine named Representative Phelan one of the ost outstanding freshmen after his first session and in 2017 honored him again as the most valuable sophomore member of the Legislature.
Representative Phelan is one of three house members appointed to the State Water Infrastructure Fund for Texas Advisory Committee. The purpose of the panel is to review the overall operation, function and structure of the state water fund and to assist the Texas Water Development Board in achieving its goal of providing $27 billion in state water plan projects over the next 50 years.
Mr. Phelan is unopposed in his re-election bid.

Nominations for VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS
In recognition of “Service Above Self,” on Wednesday, November 14, the Rotary Club of Beaumont will recognize and honor individuals who exemplify a “service above self” attitude in their vocation and daily work.
These coveted awards are given annually to community members who demonstrate exceptional service, honesty, and friendliness in performing their jobs. Some past recipients describe receiving this honor as "a treasure," "very special," and "the only time I've received anything like this." If you are observant when patronizing some workplaces in town, you will see a Vocational Excellence certificate awarded to a recipient in previous years, still hanging proudly where all can see.
With the date just preceding Thanksgiving, it is a wonderful time to give thanks for and recognize the good work of others in our community.
We appreciate your support of this honor with your nominations of deserving people who you have come in contact with through your business transactions. If not completed yet, please have your nomination submitted by the deadline of November 2.

Applications for students to attend RYLA were distributed to the high school counselors for distribution to select students in the 11th grade. If you have a child or grandchild who attends the Early College High School, Kelly, Legacy, Beaumont United or West Brook, please encourage them to see their counselor for an application. If they are unable to get an application from the school counselor, please get one from Randy Shelton or the Rotary Office. The deadline to submit applications is November 5.

Perhaps you've only heard about it ... or perhaps you've attended before ... either way, Rotarians are invited to participate in District 5910 RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Camp!
Whether you would like to go for the full three-day experience, or can only go for a small part of a day, you must sign up/register to take part. Please:
a. go to the District 5910 website (Rotary5910.org);
b. click on Youth/Young Professionals tab found in the white area at the top of the page;
c. on the drop down menu, click on RYLA;
d. go to to left column, under Links, and click on 2019 RYLA Volunteer Registration.
There is no charge for adult volunteers but you must be registered through this online link. If you need assistance, phone the Rotary office at 409-842-1913.

The Interact Clubs in the District will be having the fall Mixer in a few weeks and the students are collecting items that are needed by the Rainbow Room to give to young children who have to be displaced from their home by Child Protective Services.
Items being collected are:
small blankets (WalMart has them for $2.50 in the bedding department),
books for children,
small stuff toys (no larger than 12"),
and healthy snack food.
If you would like to help the Interact Clubs by donating, please bring items to a meeting or to the Rotary office on or before Wednesday, November 14.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION TO MASONS
On October 28, Becky and Chuck Mason were inducted into the Arch Klumph Society in Evanston, Illinois at the Rotary International headquarters.
Named after the sixth president of Rotary, the Arch Klumph Society recognizes The Rotary Foundation's highest tier of donors — those who have contributed $250,000 or more during their lifetime.
What an achievement! What an honor for Club #72 to have them as members of our club!

"An Evening to Dare to Dream"

How did Rotary International decide to establish a campaign to eradicate polio? Attendees at the Rotary Club of Beaumont program for World Polio Day found out on October 24th. Rotarians, family members, and guests joined together at the Lamar University John Gray Center for a special showing of "Dare to Dream: How Rotary Became the Heart and Soul of Polio Eradication." The documentary film recounted the events and challenges that led to this worldwide initiative.
As Rotary approached the 75th anniversary in 1980, RI leadership developed a long range vision of what the organization would look like at 100. Following the eradication of Smallpox In 1980, there was initially a reluctance to begin another global vaccination program for a single disease. Some believed it would be better to focus RI efforts on a "horizontal" approach to fighting disease. After much debate, it was finally determined that Polio eradication would be a major program of the "Disease Prevention and Treatment" area of focus for RI. The fundraising and logistics program was named Polio Plus.
The final three polio endemic countries are Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria. For complete eradication of Polio to be declared, three years must elapse with no polio cases reported. Thus far in 2018, there have been four polio cases reported in Pakistan, sixteen cases reported in Afghanistan, and no new cases in Nigeria.
We are so close.
Cindy Cherry, Chair of the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, announced that the Foundation would match money donated to polio eradication this month with the funds the Foundation received as memorial gifts in Alex Broussard's memory. Alex was deeply involved in the effort to end polio during his tenures as District 5910 Governor even traveling to India to administer the vaccine. Honorary member Marie Broussard was recognized as well and presented with a chrysanthemum by Trustee Michael Wolf.
Thanks to Gigi Mazzola for chairing the World Polio Day event this year, to the Lamar University Advancement office for hosting, and to the Cardiovascular Foundation of Southeast Texas for their generous sponsorship of the program.
