MEETING PREVIEW
February 17, 2021

“Cattail Marsh: an Incredible Nature Experience

Christina Lokey
Director of Marketing
John Beaver
Ecotourism Development
Coordinator
Beaumont Convention & Visitors Bureau

Come enjoy some warm and beautiful scenes of the natural beauty in our own backyard, Cattail Marsh Scenic Wetlands, with our two guest hosts:  Christina Lokey, Director of Marketing, and John Beaver, Ecotourism Development Coordinator, both with the Beaumont Convention & Visitors Bureau.

"Cattail Marsh includes 900-acres of wetlands and offers a variety of recreational activities with a new boardwalk and more than eight miles of gravel levee roads for jogging, hiking, biking, horseback riding, bird watching and wildlife photography along the banks of Hildebrandt Bayou and Willow Marsh Bayou. Cattail Marsh is a wildlife refuge for a variety of aquatic mammals and more than 250 species of birds annually, including: pelicans, egrets, roseate spoonbills, ducks, ibis, doves and red-winged blackbirds." (from the website https://www.beaumontcvb.com/).

Christina and John will share the story of this beautiful natural refuge, how it was created and developed into the great tourist attraction that it is.  They will tell us about the many opportunities and events you can enjoy - from kids crafts to yoga classes - that are available inside the Education Center.  No need to put on your coat for this meeting and everyone will have a front row seat for the excursion!

Volunteers are needed to help at the Beaumont Health Department, 3040 College St., with COVID vaccine distributions.  They can use volunteers to assist the medical staff with the lines at check-in, walking patients to the assigned stations and those sort of tasks. (You won't be asked to do medical tasks that you aren't qualified to do!).  Add your name to the volunteer list and indicate a good phone number.  An administrator from the BHD will phone you and schedule a date and time that is convenient for you.  At the current time, they are administering the vaccine on Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.  They may extend to weekends if more vaccine becomes available.

Thank you to the many Rotarians who helped to brighten another person's Valentine's Day a lot brighter!  The Rotary Club of Beaumont delivered over 200 Valentines to seniors in assisted living facilities. Indeed, Rotary has ❤️!

Rotarian Sheree Pierce delivered Valentines to Brookdale, Arden Place and Spindletop Hill after learning that Calder Woods had received an abundance of cards thanks to many who saw the story on the news. Thank you to everyone who shared the love!

It was a cold and blustery day but there were many, many teachers who were very happy to receive donations for their students and classrooms!  School Tools, a program of the Southeast Texas Food Bank, gives students the school supplies they need for their school work. Because of Covid, students and parents have been unable to shop for their supplies at School Tools so the Food Bank had a number of people help with a School Tools distribution to teachers for their students.

It was an outdoor event and while the weather was cold, four warm-hearted Rotarians joined with other volunteers to lend a hand:  Lynn Castle, Cindy Cherry, John Lee and Tim Sudela.

Rotarians, we really need you to become a part of the weekly meeting!  We need volunteers for leading the invocation and the pledges. Please consider volunteering! Look at your calendar and select a date that is convenient for your schedule. Red Badges are strongly encouraged to volunteer for this opportunity so you can move closer to your blue badge and members can get to know you better too.
