At the start of his tenure as Club President, Ted Moor expressed that members of our club should take the opportunity to travel to view one of the Rotary projects that the Club invested in, not that he questioned the use of the funds or the value of the work, but that those Rotarians could return and bring the story to life for the Club members. The Foundation Board of Trustees worked with him to make some funding available for two Rotarians to go along with a group of members of the Rotary Club of Tulsa, the club with which we have worked to dig water wells in Nicaragua.
As soon as he announced the plan to the club, Rotarians began to express interest and make a verbal commitment to personally invest any other funds needed in order to go. The first two people who did so were Denise Berry and Jay Wilson.
The team gathered in Houston on Wednesday, February 22 and flew that evening to see first-hand how people have to live in parts of the world that have so little. When we take for granted that fresh, clean water will run from any faucet we open, and there will be iced water on the table at any meal and from any showerhead we stand under, these Rotarians will tell us of the plight of people living where fresh, clean water is quite the luxury.
Come hear the tale of their experience and observations. Come see the pictures they brought back to share with you. It is a guarantee that you will never sit at the dinner table and lift that glass of fresh cold water to your lips again without first thinking about what you saw and heard at Rotary from these two Rotarians.

Damon West is telling his own tale: of drug abuse, addiction, prison, family support, faith, and recovery. Damon, from Port Arthur, has dedicated himself to telling his story to people of all ages and walks of life, in the hopes of saving others from what he has experienced. Come hear his story of "Drug Abuse: the Impact on the Individual and the Community." Bring a friend.

PROGRAM REVIEW
March 1, 2017
"It's a New Season
of Lamar University Football"
Mike Schultz
Head Football Coach
Lamar University
by Bobbie Applegate
Mike Shultz addressed the club with a vision and a sense of humor.
Coach Shultz has Three Foundation Pillars to success.
The first Foundation is the desire to create student athletes who will graduate with a degree. He doesn’t think that this is a difficult challenge. Players are monitored on their class attendance and he stresses that players must also be respectful of course instructors/professors. His staff closely monitors this situation and there are consequences to be had if this is not done. (More on Camp Fun later.)
The second Foundation is creating student athletes who want to win a championship. Coach Schultz thinks this is not a particularly difficult challenge either. The challenge is getting everyone to buy into the concept and this is done in training. Four days a week, players are up and running at 6 am for about 45 minutes. This is the beginning of training at the championship level. If they don’t go to class or have been inconsistent, they go to Camp Fun the fifth day of the week at 6 am. Rigorous training happens at Camp Fun and players want to avoid it. But they will remain in the Camp as long as it takes to correct any issues the player is having.
The third Foundation is creating a positive presence in the Lamar Community and the community at large. This will be done by pairing position players with various student and community organizations to help people at Lamar and in the community. Players need to understand the good feeling that happens when helping others.
The Community can help by joining the Cardinal Club, attending the games, and tailgating.
Even with the late start into the recruiting season, Coach Shultz believes that he has recruited a good class who has potential. Go Cards!
