Dr. Jaime R. Taylor is the 16th president of Lamar University, which serves more than 17,000 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. Before his appointment in July 2021, Taylor served as Marshall University's provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. Signature achievements during his time at Marshall include the development of a fixed-wing aviation program and the doubling of university-wide research expenditures, the latter leading to a new Carnegie classification for Marshall as an R2 research institution.
Prior to his work at Marshall, Taylor spent a significant portion of his career at Austin Peay State University, where he served two years as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, eight years as dean of the College of Science and Mathematics and eight years as chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Taylor is an award-winning teacher of physics and was honored as an Austin Peay State University Outstanding Alumni.
Taylor received his Ph.D. and M.S. in engineering from the University of Tennessee Space Institute, his B.S. in physics and mathematics from Austin Peay State University and an A.A.S. in industrial engineering technology from Nashville State Technical Institute. He also spent four years as a NASA Faculty Fellow working on applications of soft computing.

POLLINATOR GARDEN
The Rotary Club of Beaumont, in partnership with the Spindletop Rotary Club, the City of Beaumont, and the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, is building a pollinator garden at the Nature Center in Tyrrell Park.
As a first step, volunteers from both Rotary Clubs will assemble planter boxes at the Nature Center on November 9th and 16th from 9:00 am to noon, at Tyrrell Park. A total of eight (8) planter boxes, measuring 6 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft will be stationed across the front of the Nature Center and will hold pollinator friendly plants.
While the planters will be constructed in November, the actual planting of flowers will occur in March of 2025. All activities will be done by members of the two Rotary Clubs.
There is a limit of 20 spots for each day. Volunteers must be able to bend, lift, hammer, etc. This will require some physical strength.

Chief Tim Ocnaschek
Beaumont Chief of Police

Beaumont Chief of Police, Tim Ocnaschek, was the speaker at the October 30meeting of the Rotary Club of Beaumont. Chief Ocnascheck mentioned that indirectly, the donation that our club made to the Beaumont Police Department assisted in the apprehension of criminals in a recent federal case. The donated funds were used to purchase devices that connect business security cameras to the BPD’s FUSUS system which drives their Real Time Crime Center.
Chief Ocnaschek brings more than 39 years of law-enforcement experience to the City of Beaumont. He joined the Beaumont Police Department in 1992, where he accepted increasing responsibilities via promotions. In 2007, in addition to police duties, he was appointed as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Beaumont and is responsible for the recognized program that Beaumont continues to enjoy today. In July 2024, he was appointed from the rank of Captain to become Chief of Police.
Chief Ocnaschek’s primary message was the importance of collaboration and technology. He likened the recent technology initiated by the BPD to the efficiency gained when the department developed an automobile fleet. Collaboration with organizations and the general public brings synergy and leverage to the work of the police department.
Cynthia Wolf provided a Memorial Resolution for past club President, Charles ‘Charlie’ Weinbaum. Charlie’s son Bo and daughter Becky were in attendance. Stephanie Shoemaker updated the club on the newly former 30 Something committee. M
Mayor Roy West served at the head table introducing Chief Ocnascheck. Mayor West was joined by Tish Cornell who led the invocation, Micheal A. Perez, who led pledges to our nation and state flags, and Dena Hughes, who introduced guests and visiting Rotarians. Serving at the finance table were Jeff Beaver and Jacques Gagne.
