"In addition to being a distinguished judge, Stevens is an expert on the Constitution who fervently believes it is not just words on paper but the essential American text," wrote James Shannon, news reporter for The Examiner (September 17, 2015).
Mr. Shannon made the statement above after hearing Judge John Stevens speak about the United States Constitution as Stevens was swearing in an "overflow crowd of hundreds of citizens" in the Jury Impaneling Room before their possible service on a jury. The message Judge Stevens delivered to that crowd of citizens was so powerful and moving that the reporter gave a lengthy report, quoting the statements made to the group gathered that day. He reported they rose in an ovation as Judge Stevens left the courtroom.
On the anniversary of the September 11th attacks on our country, to have Judge Stevens speak of the meaning of the Preamble of the United States Constitution is certain to be moving and inspiring. Don't miss this opportunity.

Do you remember earlier this year when Rotarians participated in a project at Pietzsch-MacArthur Elementary School and helped to put the finishing touches on The NEST Learning Lab? (See photo album of the day our club worked here.) It is a great addition to that school, and the students are learning and growing by taking advantage of the fine facility. The facility was so well-received that Lamar University has decided to continue developing NESTs at the other elementary schools in Beaumont.
The next two schools selected to have a NEST built on the campus are Blanchette and Charlton-Pollard Elementary. Rotarians are needed to help with these two facilities. One assembly was originally scheduled for September 7th but had to be changed. This Saturday, September 14th from 9:00-11:00 a.m., Rotarians are needed at Blanchette Elementary, and from Noon-2:00 p.m. at Charlton-Pollard Elementary.
If you are able to help either during the morning or afternoon on Saturday, or perhaps both times, please go to the on-line sign up and let us know when to expect you.

Strategic Planning Committee Actively Engaged
A successful organization or business will find itself actively involved in the process of on-going strategic planning. With a committee under the leadership of Craig Escamilla and the Board of Directors, the Rotary Club of Beaumont is actively involved in that process.
Recently, the Board approved the Committee contracting with a local firm to help us gain insight into recruiting and retaining members. A small group of Rotarians will be invited to participate in a focus group to assist us in obtaining objective input that will be helpful to the Strategic Planning committee as they address the tough questions that face any organization such as growth, adherence to mission, fiscal matters, and more.
At the August 28th meeting, Craig told Rotarians that the firm of Robin Troy, Neil-Troy Advertising, was engaged by the Board to lead the focus group work so unbiased information could be obtained. Robin will be provided with members' names and contact information and she will select and contact those to participate in the focus groups. If you get the call to service, please agree and participate readily. We need you.

The much anticipated annual fundraiser, Wine Down With Rotary, will take place on Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 5:30-7:30 at the Beaumont Event Centre. The proceeds from this fundraiser go to the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, Inc. which provides the financial support to the Club's service projects.
Tickets will be distributed to members on Wednesday, so you can begin selling them to your co-workers, friends and neighbors. Please plan to pick up at least one packet of six tickets at the "Wine Sales" table in the back of the Ballroom on Wednesday or visit the Rotary office at your convenience.
We are asking for you to also consider becoming a sponsor of the event or arranging for your business to be a sponsor. A BIG thank you to those who have already done so! We appreciate your support!
The Committee would love to make this our most profitable Wine Down With Rotary yet, and they are working hard! Won't you please support this fundraiser with your sponsorship or by purchasing a bundle of tickets?

At Wine Down With Rotary, we will have a raffle of items like we have done in previous years. If you can make a donation of an item, please bring it to one of the September meetings so our committee can get busy organizing the donations into handsome baskets or featured items. It can be anything at all! Be creative!
A new addition to Wine Down With Rotary this year will be an exciting Wine Pull! Rotarians are asked to help make it fun and successful by donating a bottle of wine, valued at $20 or more. We hope everyone will also buy a $20 cork and win a mystery bottle matching the number on their cork.
Wine Down With Rotary proceeds go to the Beaumont Rotary Foundation and is our second largest fundraiser. The monies earned fund the many service projects of the club including Camp RYLA for high school students, college scholarships, the Non-Traditional Scholarship, service projects throughout the year, the literacy project at Martin Elementary, the Layette project, and our Rotary efforts to End Polio Now.

"Rotary Connects the World"

Rotary has been a passion for Betsy for the past 29 years. She remembers early on going to another club for a make-up meeting and being impressed by how friendly everyone she met was. She has found that continually inside Rotary. In 1998 she went to her first Rotary International Convention and was impressed by the “internationality” of the meeting and that everyone had the same goals: provide clean water, improve economic situations, fighting disease, saving mothers and children, supporting education and ending polio forever. There are continuing connectors to people around the world.
Betsy was an ambassador to Brazil for 30 days. She had opportunities to see the practice of veterinary medicine there, education for that career, and stay with different Rotarian families along the way. During her stay she was introduced to the culture of Brazil through visits to museums and trips to many different clubs.
Rotary helps connect the world and opens doors to help people live a better life. The RI Foundation is very active in pursing projects around the world. Funding this Foundation through the Paul Harris Fellow program or End Polio now is important to us all and our support is needed.
In 2018-19, District 5910 was number two in the world in donations to Polio Plus. There are only two countries at this time with active cases of polio: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria has had no new cases in 3 years.
Our District is working on several global grants at this time. Betsy’s hope is that we can have experiences in Rotary beyond our local club. The experiences will help Rotary connect to the world.
