In the summer of 2019, Callie Summerlin and a team of Rotarians from across the United States embarked on a Rotary Global Grant Project in Antigua, Guatemala. In March of 2020, she was in Cuba on a mission trip when the immergence of Covid-19 cut the journey short. We rescheduled Callie's presentation, originally planned for July 2020, until we could all be together in person to hear about the Guatemala projects, international service and how Rotary is creating lasting change around the world.
If you’ve struggled with rejoining weekly meetings, this is your chance to remember again why Rotary has been a precious, worthwhile commitment over the years. This week, we invite you to hear Callie's presentation and, as she says, "become blessed" and reaffirm that you are a Rotarian. Bring a potential member with you as well.

Can you imagine a child having to sleep on the floor every night? It is hard to believe that there are hundreds of children right here in our local area doing that. The request for beds is staggering. Let's do something about the large number of children in need! This is one non-profit that needs to be put out-of-business!
John Lee has arranged for Rotarians and friends to work together on Saturday, July 17 at the assembly warehouse at 2950 Milam in Beaumont. No tools are needed and no carpentry skills are required! Wear your "Rotarian at Work" shirt and come get a little sawdust in your hair and let's see how many beds we can complete that day. Work will begin at 8:30 a.m. and last until about noon (though it is usually complete by 11:30 a.m.) Children and teens are invited to take part too but a parent must be present with each minor child.
In June, many Rotarians helped at one of three places where we gave time and service to helping those who suffer from food insecurity. In thanks, we received some very gracious letters of appreciation that are shared here. (If you click on the images, a larger version of the letter will open that can be more easily read.)

“Everyone Bring One"

The annual Installation of the incoming Board of Directors, officers, and Club President is always an inspiring event, and this year was no exception.
Past District Governor Roger McCabe installed incoming Secretary Dana Timaeus, Treasurer Karyn Husbands, Vice President Uliana Trylowsky, Sergeant-at-Arms Jeff Beaver, and the four newly elected Directors - Jennifer Gregory, Lynn Hill, John Lee, and Jay Wilson. Returning Directors installed also were Diane Bass, Deborah Drago, Allan Higgins, Rebekah Maxwell, Sheree Pierce, Mary Poole and Randy Shelton. Incoming President Brad Brown accepted and agreed to "have the courage of a leader and the humility of a servant, leading with the highest principles and in accord with the Constitution and ByLaws of Rotary International and the Club."
Nineteen Past Presidents conducted the traditional "Passing of the Gavel" from one-to-another, "signifying the continuity of leadership and the strong foundation upon which we build a stronger program of Service Above Self and a stronger club." Once the gavel reached incoming President Brad, he staunchly walked the line in reverse, shaking hands with each past president and thanking them for their leadership which will help him to continue the Club's mission.
President Brad Brown then addressed the Club with his message about his goals and plans for the upcoming year. He described how he is looking forward to working with the Board of Directors which has already had a "spirited discussion" about the goals and plans for the year ahead. He spoke of the Strategic Plan, newly approved by the Board, which will serve as our "plan of action" for the coming year.
Brad spoke of the concern that membership has been affected by the Covid Pandemic and that, in turn, directly affects the Club's "large club" status, having a direct negative effect on the club's fiscal operations. The Board set a goal of three new members per month for the coming year, and he stressed the theme for the year will be:
President Brad promises to remind members of this theme all year because we will only be able to continue and expand our efforts to serve the community with a healthy and viable club membership. He ended with, "Let's grow our membership and serve to change lives in our community and beyond!"
