In the 1930s, Rotarians regularly read the musings of two members in the Rotarygrams, the Club's weekly bulletin.  The writings of Chester A. Easley and Rabbi Samuel Rosinger were discovered by researcher Marilyn Manson-Hayes who found them both entertaining and interesting descriptions of the era of the Great Depression, prohibition, and Rotary's leadership in community service.  

Marilyn was selected as one of the first Fellows of The Center for History & Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast.  She and her cast will be presenting a multimedia performance of the Depression Era using the essays of Rotarians Easley and Rosinger in the Rotarygrams as the basis of "1930s Beaumont Voices," one in a series of lectures for the Center at Lamar.  The performance at the Rotary Club of Beaumont on April 4 will be a preview of the entire program one can enjoy by attending on April 23.  Come enjoy the show!

The Rotary Club of Beaumont was invited to participate in the Neches River Festival parade on Friday, April 13 in downtown Beaumont!  What a great way to get the Rotary brand out and about town!
 
Everyone is invited to participate by walking along the route with our decorated truck which new member, Ty Coudrain, has graciously agreed to drive for us.  President-Elect Lynn Castle and Board members Randy Shelton and Brenda Gray have already volunteered to walk the route so come join in the fun!

Congratulations to Rotary University Graduates!
 
Rotary University Dean Joanne Brown was proud to award three former "Red Badges" with their Bachelor of Rotary Science degree and the coveted Blue Badge.

Denise Berry challenges all Rotarians to join her and earn a Doctor of Rotary Science degree from Rotary University!  She easily met all requirements and proudly added another acknowledgement to her badge.Congratulations, Denise!
 
If you are not aware, you should know even long-time Rotarians can earn advanced degrees.  Who is the next Master or Ph.D. degree candidate?  Talk with Rotary University Dean, Joanne Brown, about the next step in your Rotary education.

If you are one of the few members who had to miss the meeting on March 7 when Dr. Sylvia Whitlock was our speaker in celebration of International Women's Day, you missed an awesome program by this very special lady who determinedly challenged Rotary International until women were welcomed into the organization, paving the way for the thousands of female Rotarians. 
 
The good news is that Paula Bothe, President of Four Alarm Productions, was in the house!  And her professional production company recorded the entire meeting for us to have to watch again and again, to remember the time Sylvia Whitlock visited Beaumont and our Rotary Club!

"The FBI Mission and Priorities"

Minique Crump is the current Supervisory Special Agent of the FBI in Beaumont.  The Resident Agency of the FBI in Beaumont is part of the Houston Division and covers six counties in SE Texas.  Agent Crump grew up in a dangerous neighborhood in Boston, MA, which fostered her passion for a career in criminal justice.  She received a Bachelors and Master's Degree in Administration of Justice from Salve Regina University.  She served in the Marine Corp as a Major.  While a marine, she attended the Marine Corp University and received a Master's Degree in Staff Management and National Security.  She then joined the FBI and has served in a number of locations, including Washington DC, where she worked with the Counterterrorism group.  She arrived in Beaumont six and a half months ago to lead the Resident Agency here.  
 
Agent Crump gave us an overview of the FBI, its structure, offices, number of employees, its mission and priorities.  The FBI has 56 Field Offices in major cities across the country and 84 Attached Offices around the world.  It currently has 36,246 employees; 13,759 of those are agents, 22,457 are support professionals.
 
The FBI's mission is "To protect the American people and uphold the Constitution of the United States."  It has eight priorities:
  • Protect the United States from terrorist attack
  • Protect the United States against foreign intelligence operations and espionage
  • Protect the United States against cyber-based attacks and high-technology crimes
  • Combat public corruption at all levels
  • Protect civil rights
  • Combat transnational/national criminal organizations and enterprises
  • Combat major white-collar crime
  • Combat significant violent crime
 
The FBI, at least locally, tries to work closely with local law enforcement in all of these areas.  She discussed a recent operation in which the local office helped to apprehend a suspect who was making explosive devices.  One of the devices was detonated in a controlled environment, and they are working with local officials to build a case against the suspect.  This operation was the result of a tip from our local crime stoppers hotline.
