LU Fine Arts and Communication Department
and the Beaumont Community"

Lamar University
 
The arts and good communication are essential to a healthy community. Communication and the arts lead to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing.  The person who knows this topic best is Derina Holtzhausen, Dean of the College of Fine Arts & Communication at Lamar University.
 
Prior to coming to Lamar University, Dr. Derina Holtzhausen was director of the School of Media and Strategic Communication at Oklahoma State University.  She served there as professor and director for the SMSC.  With a quarter century of experience as a journalist and strategic communications executive in the complex South African environment, Dr. Holtzhausen is a strong proponent of the role communication, media and the arts play in society to promote social justice and discussions on diversity and equality. Under her leadership, enrollment in the school grew 25 percent to around 790 students on its Stillwater and Tulsa campuses.  Student diversity in the school increased under her watch from 15.4 percent in 2008 to 25.6 percent students on its Stillwater and Tulsa campuses. Prior to joining OSU, Dr. Holtzhausen was an associate professor, head of public relations sequence, and graduate director of the School of Mass Communications at University of South Florida.

On Saturday, October 20, Rotarians will work with Nehemiah's Vision on home rebuilding projects in Vidor.  Plan now to come help this agency with homes that were damaged or completely lost after Hurricane Harvey.  The online sign-up is ready for you to indicate if you will work the morning or afternoon shift, or if you work all-day.   As Chair Deborah Drago explained at the last meeting, all tools needed will be provided and lunch will be served as well.

You are invited to attend the Club's evening meeting on October 24, World Polio Day, to view the documentary "Dare to Dream:  How Rotary Became the Heart and Soul of Polio Eradication."   Instead of the Noon meeting on that day, we will convene at 6:30 p.m. at the John Gray Center on the Lamar University campus, enjoy some appetizers and beverages and then preview this one-hour movie.
 
 
Please join us and invite your family, friends, and business associates.  The admission is $25 and all proceeds will go to the Rotary Foundation and End Polio Now campaign.  Gratitude goes to the Lamar University Advancement Department and the Cardiovascular Foundation of Southeast Texas for underwriting the evening!
 
Funds raised and donated to the End Polio campaign will be matched by both the District 5910 Governor's initiative (1:1) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (2:1) so your admission fee and all additional donations will be making a significant impact on polio eradication.  Members and non-member guests can register for the evening online by clicking on the image above or here.
 
 
If you cannot attend the evening event and/or would prefer to make a donation to end polio, please follow the link to the END POLIO NOW event registration as well and you will have the option to make a donation only.  And thank you very much.
 
Please remember: There is NOT a meeting at the Elegante at Noon on October 24 because this event is the same day, in the evening at Lamar University.

After explaining about the Evening to "Dare to Dream" at the meeting on September 26,  Gigi Mazzola added that during the month of October, Marco Polio Pig will make the rounds of the tables at each lunch meeting to beg for donations to help with polio eradication. 
 
She explained that the donations from Rotarians during this campaign will be matched by the Beaumont Rotary Foundation/Alex Broussard Memorial Fund $1 for $1.  The amount the club donates will then be matched by a District 5910 donor $1 for $1.  And then, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match the total donation $2 to $1!  
 
President Lynn Castle eagerly started Marco's "feeding" with a large bill before Gigi could sit down and feed him as well before starting him on his journey around the tables at the meeting.
Ed Edson, III also generously added to the piggy bank.  
 
And at the conclusion of the meeting, Marco Polio was stuffed to the top!  Grand total for the day was a whopping $584.15!  Thank you for your generosity!
 
Bring along some cash to the meetings on October 10 and 17 and plan to feed Marco then.  He will also go with us to the Evening to "Dare to Dream" on October 24 at Lamar University.

PROGRAM REVIEW
October 4, 2018
 
 
After a one-year lapse, the Club once again hosted Wine Down With Rotary as a fundraiser for the Beaumont Rotary Foundation.  And it was a wonderful event!  The 300+ people in attendance certainly enjoyed the outstanding wines and delicious food, the excellent music of the Toby Castro Quintet, the fun raffle, and the great silent auction.   A huge thank you goes out to the Wine Down With Rotary committee for the many hours of meetings and planning that went into creating such an enjoyable event. 
 
Photographer Tim Sudela stayed busy all evening taking some professional quality photos of many couples and small groups of friends.  Take a few minutes and view the slide show below and you can tell by the smiles how much fun people were having.
 
Chair Kathleen Alsup will be able to report on the financial success at the meeting on October 17 when all expenses have been paid.  Stay tuned.
