The Rotary Club of Beaumont, TX, is a large and diverse fellowship of inspired business, professional, and civic leaders with significant community connections that foster the ideals of Service Above Self and high ethical standards.
On Wednesday, November 14, the Rotary Club of Beaumont will recognize and honor individuals who exemplify a “Service Above Self” attitude in the performance of their job. These coveted awards are given annually to members of the community who demonstrate exceptional service, honesty, and friendliness in the performance of their jobs. With the date intentionally chosen to be near Thanksgiving, it is the perfect time to express appreciation for the good work of others in our community and be thankful for the exemplary service they demonstrate.

The Interact Clubs in the District will be having the fall Mixer in a few weeks and the students are collecting items that are needed by the Rainbow Room to give to young children who have to be displaced from their home by Child Protective Services.
Items being collected are:
small blankets (WalMart has them for $2.50 in the bedding department),
books for children,
small stuff toys (no larger than 12"),
and healthy snack food.
The date of the Mixer was changed to November 29 so if you would like to help the Interact Clubs by donating one or more of the ite,s, please bring them to a meeting or to the Rotary office on or before Wednesday, November 28.

Rotary After Hours on Thursday, November 8 at the Dishman Art Museum on the Lamar University campus was a most enjoyable event!
A large group of Rotarians, friends and family members enjoyed delicious buffet of appetizers and beverages while strolling through two inspired exhibitions.
Many thanks to our host, Derina Holtzhausen, museum director Dennis Kiel, and drawing instructor Christopher Troutman who shared insights into the exhibits that were enjoyed that evening.

"Home for a Hero"

Today’s Veteran’s Day program was a wonderful example of a community coming together for a service above self project. Working with the Texas Sentinels Foundation, Charlie Foxworth took on the initial challenge of building a home for a veteran. An admitted novice in this area, he contacted the Texas Sentinels Foundation to start building a home for a hero. The Foundation interviews and screens candidates to become recipients but the building of the home is strictly a community project. The twenty-first home built by the Foundation was completed this year in the Lumberton area.
Charlie Foxworth partnered with Gene Arnold, Rob Glassey and Michael Perez to initate the project. All donations realized came from the community. In the end, one third of the funds came in the form of cash donations and two thirds came from in-kind donations from the local building community, aptly led by Rob Glassey with Armour General Contractors. The mission was to build the home for a veteran that was debt-free, mortgage free and fully furnished.
The home built is ADA compliant and this three-bedroom home was totally furnished by Howell Furniture. Against all odds this home was completed after Harvey in very good time. It is the first home built by the Foundation fully funded by a local community.
When Phillip Blackmon was initially contacted by the Foundation he thought he was interviewed to become a member of the Foundation. He was interested in helping other veterans. In actuality, he was interviewed by the Foundation to become the future recipient of a home. Blackmon was badly injured by an IED in Mosel, Iraq. He was a member of the bomb defusing squad. Blackmon was awarded the Purple Heart for his actions on the day of the explosion,.
Phil Blackmon’s expression of thanks started with a commitment to help others. He has chosen to reflect on all the goodness in the world rather than dealing with the bad. He is writing a book “Boxing with God” which will tell his story and his perspective on what matters in life.
