Lieutenant Cody Courts is a lifelong resident of Southeast Texas. He graduated from Vidor High School in 2002, and received a degree in psychology from Lamar University in 2006. He began his career as a CPS investigator, and became a police officer in 2008. He has worked for Beaumont Police Department as a patrol officer, field training officer, narcotics detective, field training sergeant, internal affairs investigator, patrol lieutenant, and he is currently the unit commander for the Real-Time Crime Center and the 911 Operations Center, as well as the co-commander for the Hostage Negotiations Team. Courts is a certified instructor, mental health officer, and he is a Trust-Based Relational Intervention Practitioner. Most importantly, he has a wonderful, intelligent wife; a hilarious, bright teenage son; and extremely supportive friends and family.

President, Lamar Institute of Technology

The first regular meeting of the 2024-25 year for the Rotary Club of Beaumont was opened by President Michael Perez with the strike of the Rotary bell. Sidney Valentine, Ph.D., fourth president of Lamar Institute of Technology, was welcomed as the keynote speaker. Dr. Valentine shared the progress of several construction projects on the LIT campus that will support new initiatives the college is pursuing. With an over 90% placement rate of its graduates, LIT provides a remarkable return on investment as a bridge to high paying careers.
Prior to arriving at LIT, Dr. Valentine served as associate vice president of industrial and engineering technology at York College in South Carolina, and was director of workforce and economic development at the West Virginia Community and Technical College System. Dr. Valentine earned a doctoral degree and Master of Science degree in computer engineering from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., and a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from WVU Institute of Technology in Montgomery, West Virgina.
Hannah LeTulle, Director of Communications & Marketing at LIT introduced Dr. Valentine. Rotarians proudly joining Hannah at the head table were Lee Potter, owner/president of American Air Systems, Inc. who presented the invocation, Terri Potter, Vice President of Marketing & Public Relations, American Air Systems who led the pledges to the American & Texas flags, and Darren Erwin, President & CEO of the Better Business Bureau Southeast Texas who introduced guests. Eighteen members who joined by Zoom were grateful to unite with those attending in person.
