Martin Elementary School will host their annual Polar Express Day for students on Friday, December 15, 2023. In order to make this event a success for 545 students, they could use a little help gathering supplies and/or donations. Some items that they could use are: hot chocolate packets, marshmallows, and snack cakes. Thank you for everything that you have done and continue to do to support Martin Elementary School. Feel free to bring these items to the meeting December 6 or to the Holiday Party December 14.

SALVATION ARMY RED KETTLE PROJECT
Every year, nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army in the form of meals, shelter, after-school programs, job referrals, youth shelter intervention programs, rehabilitation services, and more. The gifts you help collect through the Red Kettle will enable these local Salvation Army programs and services to continue providing help and hope to those in need.
For a number of years, the Rotary Club of Beaumont has been one of the many organizations that tend a booth at Parkdale Mall and participate in the collection process. It is a demonstration of "Service Above Self."
Catie Miller is Chair of the project and is asking YOU to volunteer to help this year. Please sign up for the hour(s) you can help on Saturday, December 16. We need volunteers.

Join us Saturday 12/16/2023 to learn the proven process of "Vision to Success", a curated process specific for Rotary Clubs that allows the entire club to achieve continuity, consistency and consensus.
As a trained volunteer facilitator, you will be part of a special team that will help Clubs in our District make a greater impact. Trained Facilitators will be coordinated based on the location and date requested by Rotary Clubs (starting 2024). Only trained facilitators can assist in this vital effort! It is a rewarding and exciting opportunity to hear the visions, feel the passion, and see first hand Service Above Self.

Our program last week was William Grace, Branch Manager of the Tyrrell Historical Library. His topic was entitled “The Ticking Time Bomb” and dealt with the preservation of audio/video materials that have been recorded on soon to be obsolete or already obsolete mediums by transferring those recordings into digital records.
He said the last fifty years has seen an explosion in varying formats of A/V materials being recorded as well as created. In audio we had reel-to-reel, eight track, and cassette tape sound systems, while moving image has included sixteen millimeter and super eight motion picture film. Most recently we had CD Rom and DVD disk. As new technologies were developed, the older systems were no longer supported by manufacturers of these systems, so repair parts are becoming harder and harder to find. The lack of replacement parts to read this old data and duplicate it will only become more difficult as time passes, so it is essential to get this done as soon as possible.
Compounding this problem is the volume of data that needs to be preserved. Small institutions face a difficult task of preserving history not only because of the cost to repair the older machines, but the cost to store the material. Task forces have been set up to standardize the best practices of capturing a/v content in a stable media format to ensure near term permanence of the media by transforming it from analog to digital format with the best quality possible. The process is sometimes difficult because of the condition of the older data; for instance, the tape may be sticky due to humid or hot storage conditions.
Since 2017 the library has contracted with Texas Association of Moving Image (TAMI) to have its PM Magazine converted from analog to digital format. It is also in the process of converting KFDM news clips from 1977 to 1988 to digital format, realizing that in another 5-10 years, this data will probably not be convertible. In the future, the library hopes to have motion picture film, VHS, reel-to-reel tapes, and cassette tapes all converted to digital format, and it is constantly working to acquire grants to cover the cost. The library is fortunate that it has a small percentage of A/V material in its possession.
