PROGRAM PREVIEW

February 19, 2014

"The Village:  An Attempt to Turn At-Risk Kids into Productive Citizens"

Nick Lampson
Partner
Outreach Strategists

The Village will be a facility which will provide a new life and a new direction for kids unlikely to graduate from high school under normal circumstances.  The Village will be a boarding high school, converted from the Al Price Juvenile Justice Prison, for the purpose of trying to keep some high school dropouts out of prison.

The effort of applying for a charter and renovating a hard core prison into a dignified facility to board and educate children who are difficult to teach and motivate is a challenge.  In this case, it will be accomplished with vocational training and other educational activities which have been less available in Texas schools in recent years.

Nick Lampson has been a public servant since he graduated from Lamar University in 1968.  He has been a teacher, elected official, and involved in community service activities for more than four decades.

Today Nick is a partner in Outreach Strategists, a full service public affairs firm based out of Houston, which serves governmental entities, leading businesses and nonprofits for government relations, and strategic communications and businesses with public and government outreach needs.

Rotary Youth Exchange, A Life-Changing Experience

Rotary Youth Exchange,

A Life-Changing Experience

Ask any student who has lived in another country for an entire school year, or ask any family that has hosted an international student for a few months about their experience.  Without exception, they will describe it as life changing.

Rotary’s ideals include “the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace” – and how better to accomplish that than by sharing your home with a student from another country for just a few months?

Twelve students from around the world are eagerly awaiting news as to whether they will get to spend the next school year in East or Southeast Texas (our Rotary district).  In order to give them a chance, our club must find three families who are willing to let a student be a part of their family for three to four months during that time.
Read the testimonials of current and recent exchange students who have stayed in our district by clicking this link: SitePage/youth-exchange-program.  Families who have hosted a student report that their own children were deeply enriched by the experience as well.

Would you consider hosting a student for a portion of the next school year?  Do you have any ideas of other families that might consider it?  We will schedule an informational meeting for anyone who would like to find out about the process as soon as potential hosts are identified.  Email Jacque (admin@beaumontrotaryclub.org) or Becky Mason (beckylmason@mac.com) if you would like more information or know of other families who might be interested.

Playground Enjoyment Continues
Playing Together on Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day 2014 was the perfect time to visit the playground. The weather had warmed up a little and the sun was shining. So lots of people headed for the Beaumont Rotary Centennial Playground. It's a great place to have a little party or just enjoy the outdoors and the awesome play equipment.

Thank you, Rotarians and friends, for giving the families of Beaumont this wonderful playground.
(Click on the photo to see the entire album of pictures.)

Please let us know of your experiences at the Playground and your observations when you are in the vicinity.  While we have no way to actually record statistics, the journal of activity could be helpful with future grant requests and on-going improvements.

Did You Know?
History of the Rotary Bell

In 1922, U.S. Rotarians organized an attendance contest; the challenge was that the losing clubs would join in giving the winning club a prize. The Rotary Club of New York City was declared the winner and to them was awarded as a prize a bell from a popular patrol boat, which was placed on wood that came from HMS "Victory", Admiral Nelson's vessel at the battle of Trafalgar.

Since then, the bell used in Rotary meetings started to represent, as on the ships, order, discipline and the time to guide us through the weekly hour and a half meetings. The bell informs us with its sound the beginning of the Rotary meeting, at which time people present should stand, same as at the end, in order to salute the national and Rotary flags. The gavel symbolizes the authority invested in the Rotarian elected to the highest position in Rotary, and through him, reminds those present of his authority. When presidents transmit their positions to their successors at the end of their mandate, they give the bell their last hit turning the gavel over to their successor, symbolizing the transfer of authority."

"The Future of Rotary"

by Rotarian John Neely

Mr. Smallwood is an attorney who specializes in corporate, banking, real estate, and international law.  A Rotarian since 1981, Andy has received many awards, including the Rotary Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service and the Distinguished Service Award.

Rotary is growing internationally in the number of districts.  When he was District Governor there were 518 Districts worldwide. Presently, there are 534. This would lead one to believe that our membership has mushroomed, but that would be inaccurate. Although Districts have grown, our membership numbers are pretty much the same. The reason is that in the USA, membership is down.  Asia, on the other hand, has grown considerably.  Rotary is broken-down into 34 zones, each of which generally includes about 38,000 members in a geographic area.

Annual elections for the position of International President have produced representation from all over the globe. There is, however, an 'unwritten' rule that every 3 years, the selected candidate will be from Canada or the USA.

Regarding the topic of "The Future of Rotary,"  Andy stated that although China wants to be a part of Rotary, China and Rotary are still moving in different directions.  While attending a Peace Conference in South America, Andy picked up this succinct phrase:

"We are all one people, divided by governments."   Rotary is the greatest humanitarian organization in the world, and continues to demonstrate LEADERSHIP, INTEGRITY and SERVICE.

Andy Smallwood claims to be the only Past Governor from Rotary Club of Gulfway-Hobby Airport (Houston)  that has served in the last century. He also claims to be the only Past-Governor with hair.   If there's one thing that Past District Governor Smallwood  insists on it is having fun in Rotary!
