Shanna Briggs

Shanna Briggs is a dedicated individual who has devoted her life to making a positive impact in the field of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Born and raised in a loving family, Shanna experienced the profound loss of her mother ten years ago due to a rare form of dementia. This deeply personal experience ignited her passion to bring about change and support for individuals and families affected by similar conditions.

With a strong desire to help others facing the challenges of dementia, Shanna found purpose in her career as she joined the Alzheimer's Association four years ago. In her role, she has been instrumental in raising awareness, advocating for improved care and resources, and organizing fundraising events to support research efforts aimed at finding a cure. Shanna's commitment to her work stems from her firsthand understanding of the impact that dementia has on individuals and their loved ones.

Angel San Juan

Angel San Juan has been in the television news business for more than 25 years, 20 of those years in Southeast Texas.

Angel is an award-winning journalist, who says reporting is his passion.

He is a native Houstonian, who grew up in Bellaire, Texas.

He’s the son of Cuban immigrants who fled Communism in the 1960’s. Angel grew up speaking Spanish at home, so he’s bilingual. Plus, Cuban food is his favorite.

Angel has an older brother who works for Southwest Airlines.

Angel considers his parents and brother his heroes for the sacrifices they’ve made to help him achieve his goal of being a reporter.

Angel loves emceeing and volunteering at community events. His hobbies include reading and watching movies, on the big screen, not at home.

He is a proud graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Hook ‘Em!

His first job after graduating was at KTRE in Lufkin, he then would join the KFDM news team in 1998, where he would work ten years. He would later serve as News Director of Fox 4 from 2009 until 2013.

In 2016, Angel returned to KFDM/Fox 4 where he has served as Executive Producer and Investigative Reporter. He’s glad to be back to the place he calls his “TV home”.

Angel enjoys being a mentor to young reporters. He says, “They help me stay relevant, they teach me a lot, hopefully I can return the favor.”

PROGRAM REVIEW
August 30, 2023

Chelsea Tipton
Maestro
Symphony of Southeast Texas
By Chris Ayers

Fellow Rotarian, Chelsea Tipton, is the Conductor of the Symphony of Southeast Texas (SOST). The SOST is currently celebrating 71 years of service to our community and Chelsea is celebrating 14 years. Wow – what a great resource Chelsea and the Symphony is to our club and to Southeast Texas! Chelsea is passionate about music and about arts in general including dance, language, films, etc. He taught us that experiences in the arts at young ages can help develop an appreciation and an interest for a lifetime. In addition, he illustrated that music is a universal language. Music helps all of us feel a variety of feelings, at different times, for different reasons and that we all feel something from some sort of music. The SOST provides educational initiatives and this year’s theme is Majestic Visions which will provide a wide variety of types and styles that will appeal to a breadth of interest. The schedule is:

September 16: Elegance of the Dance

October 14: Mandy Barnett’s Nashville Songbook

November 11: Triumph over Tyranny December 3: The Texas Tenors “Our Favorite Time of the Year: A Symphonic Christmas”

January 24: Our Musical World

February 3: The Composer’s Spirit Revisited

March 16: A Broadway Celebration: Melissa Errico sings Sondheim

April 6: Images that Inspire

All concerts are at the Julie Roger Theater in downtown Beaumont. Please see sost.org for additional information. Thanks to Chelsea Tipton for speaking.
