Santa Claus is coming to town! Yes, indeed, he is - in about four months! However, on Wednesday, August 29, our speaker will be one of Santa's top-notch "stand-ins", John Hathaway.
District 5910 Governor John Hathaway, a member of the Rotary Club of The Woodlands, will visit the club for the annual District Governor's visit. He has a special message for the clubs of the District. (Here's a hint: we've heard from the clubs he's visited that it's a bit of a throw down challenge!)

That's right! Rotarians are catching the spirit and recruiting for the team we all belong to - ROTARY!
The Rotary League has four teams being lead by Team Captains Jennifer Burch, Ty Coudrain, Michael Perez, and Laura Winegeart. The Captains are choosing team names and we will announce those soon, but the challenge is to see which team can recruit the most NEW members to the club from July 1, 2018 until June 30, 2019. (There will likely be a factor for retention in the rules of the game, too, but that is still being determined right now!)
Meanwhile, know that you are being "scouted" and if you haven't yet been asked to join a team, you will be soon. The ball's already in play!

The August Rotary After Hours was great fun with a really large number of Rotarians, spouses, friends and even a few future Rotarians!
After enjoying delicious appetizers and beverages, a group of Rotarians and guests walk to the Museum to check out the recent renovations done to the porch.
Future Rotarians Anna Pope and Avery Hise are deep in conversation about the wonderful McFaddin-Ward House Museum.

"Safe Water for All?? Recent Water Projects in Haiti"

John Robinson is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a bachelor of science in microbiology and a masters in chemistry. He is employed as a District Manager of the Municipal Services Department of Evoqua Water Technologies in the Dallas area.
John's passion is to provide safe drinking water for people in other parts of the world that do not have access to such an important everyday necessity. He has formed a non-profit organization by the name of Water-4-Nations to work with missionaries, church groups, community leaders and others to provide this essential need to communities that don't have access to it. He has worked in Ecuador and most recently in Northern Haiti. He reported that 60% of the people in Haiti do not have access to safe drinking water. Until his most recent project in Northern Haiti (nine hours over rough terrain from Port-au-Prince), the people in this area only had rainwater and a spring shared by three nearby communities. The water from this spring is collected in a concrete basin where the people bathe, wash their clothes and fill buckets to take back to their villages for cooking. Water wells are not an option in this area.
The project involved installing a pump at the spring and running PVC pipe to three different communities 1000 feet uphill from the spring, where the water enters a 600 gallon tank. From that tank, gravity feeds the water into a chlorinator designed by John and then into two 300 gallon tanks where it is stored until delivered through four faucets at the base of the structure. The entire structure was built by the Haitians and is being maintained by them as well through a water board of directors. This gives them ownership of the project and is the way John prefers to work with the local communities.
While one safe drinking water supply facility has been completed at this location in remote Haiti, two more have yet to be completed. John gladly accepts donations to his 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to help complete the other two facilities and hopefully many more in the future.
