"World Polio Day"
Please attend the Club's evening meeting on October 24, World Polio Day, to view the documentary "Dare to Dream: How Rotary Became the Heart and Soul of Polio Eradication." Instead of the Noon meeting on that day, we will convene at 6:30 p.m. at the John Gray Center on the Lamar University campus, enjoy some appetizers and beverages and then preview this less than one-hour documentary film.
Please join us and invite your family, friends, and business associates. The admission is $25 and all proceeds will go to the Rotary Foundation and End Polio Now campaign. Gratitude goes to the Lamar University Advancement Department and the Cardiovascular Foundation of Southeast Texas for underwriting the event!
Funds raised and donated to the End Polio campaign will be matched by both the Beaumont Rotary Foundation (up to a maximum amount) and the District 5910 Governor's initiative (1:1). The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match two-to-one, so your admission fee and all additional donations will make a significant impact on polio eradication.
If you cannot attend the evening event and/or would prefer to make a donation to end polio, please follow the link to the END POLIO NOW event registration, and you will have the option to make a donation only.

Nominations for VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS
In recognition of “Service Above Self,” on Wednesday, November 14, the Rotary Club of Beaumont will recognize and honor individuals who exemplify a “service above self” attitude in their vocation and daily work.
These coveted awards are given annually to community members who demonstrate exceptional service, honesty, and friendliness in performing their jobs. Some past recipients describe receiving this honor as "a treasure," "very special," and "the only time I've received anything like this." If you are observant when patronizing some workplaces in town, you will see a Vocational Excellence certificate awarded to a recipient in previous years, still hanging proudly where all can see.
With the date just preceding Thanksgiving, it is a wonderful time to give thanks for and recognize the good work of others in our community.
We appreciate your support of this honor with your nominations of deserving people who you have come in contact with through your business transactions. If not completed yet, please have your nomination submitted by the deadline of November 2.
President Lynn Castle was pleased to present membership certificates and Rotary pins to two new members at the meeting on October 17. If you haven't met them yet, make sure you do in the coming weeks.

Bill Allen is a transferring Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Las Cruces, NM. He and his wife, Stacie, just relocated to Beaumont when he accepted the position as President & CEO of the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce. Bill was proposed by Pat Anderson.
Melissa Dyson Talakoub was proposed by her brother, Scott Hatcher, and though she grew up in a hardware store, she says she cannot fix a thing! Instead she decided to pursue a career as a realtor with Remax One in Beaumont.

On Saturday, October 20, Rotarians worked priming, painting and helping to complete the renovations to a home damaged by 4-feet of water during the Harvey flooding in Orange, TX.
Rotarians and family members who participated were: Tim Sudela, Lynn Castle, Allan Higgins, Pat Calhoun, Dana Timaeus, Kathleen Alsup, Ruby Martin, Deborah Drago, Gary Moncla, Cindy Cherry, Kristie Young, Haden Young, John Lee, Ted Moor, and Evan Lee. With encouragement from Scott Doss of Nehemiah's Vision, the group worked diligently and were able to accomplish the work in record time. And it looked like they sure had a lot of fun while doing so!

"Marco Polio," the club's pink polio pig, made another journey around the room during the meeting on October 17. The total for the day was a $183.90! Thank you again for your generosity!
Bring along some cash to the meeting on October 31. While Marco attends every week, the 31st will be the last meeting of World Polio Month, so Marco will be passed around the room one more time for your donations. Let's drive that October total up and make Marco very happy!

Applications for students to attend RYLA were distributed to the high school counselors for distribution to select students in the 11th grade. If you have a child or grandchild who attends the Early College High School, Kelly, Legacy, Beaumont United or West Brook, please encourage them to see their counselor for an application. If they are unable to get an application from the school counselor, please get one from Randy Shelton or the Rotary Office. The deadline to submit applications is November 5.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO TO CAMP?!
Perhaps you've only heard about it ... or perhaps you've attended before ... either way, Rotarians are invited to participate in District 5910 RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Camp!
Whether you would like to go for the full three-day experience, or can only go for a small part of a day, you must sign up/register to take part. Please:
a. go to the District 5910 website (Rotary5910.org);
b. click on Youth/Young Professionals tab found in the white area at the top of the page;
c. on the drop down menu, click on RYLA;
d. go to to left column, under Links, and click on 2019 RYLA Volunteer Registration.
There is no charge for adult volunteers but you must be registered through this online link. If you need assistance, phone the Rotary office at 409-842-1913.
Get registered, and then get packed to go to camp!

The Interact Clubs in the District will be having the fall Mixer in a few weeks and the students are collecting items that are needed by the Rainbow Room to give to young children who have to be displaced from their home by Child Protective Services.
Items being collected are:
small blankets (WalMart has them for $2.50 in the bedding department),
books for children,
small stuff toys (no larger than 12"),
and healthy snack food.
If you would like to help the Interact Clubs by donating, please bring items to a meeting or to the Rotary office on or before Wednesday, November 14.

"Representing the 14th District of Texas"

Randy Weber is the U.S. Congressman who represent Southeast Texas in District 14 and has served as a Congressman for 10 years. The 14 District encompasses Brazoria, Galveston, Chambers and Jefferson counties.
Congressman Weber serves on the House Aerospace Caucus, Congressional Shipbuilding Caucus, Oil and National Security Caucus, Congressional Prayer Caucus, Congressional Small Business Caucus and many others.
During Hurricane Harvey, Congressman Weber helped coordinate benefits between municipal, state and federal authorities and agencies. He stated that all of Southeast Texas was gracious and diligent in the willingness to rebuild and everyone has worked cooperatively to help those in need. He accurately credited Mayor Becky Ames with her statement, “Harvey brought the downpour and Texas brought the outpour.”
Following the school shooting in Santa Fe, TX, Congressman Weber helped the families that were affected and attended all 10 funerals of those that were killed. He stated that it was the most difficult thing he has done since serving in Congress.
Finally, when asked about the so-called trade wars, Congressman Weber stated that the trade war was fought years ago and that the U.S. lost. The new trade negotiations are efforts made by the Administration to make global trade fair and equitable to U.S. citizens.
