"The State of the Judicial System in Jefferson County"

A day after his 70th birthday, Jefferson County Criminal District Court Judge John Burch Stevens, Jr. oversaw the selection of a jury ahead of his 500th jury trial in 16 years – a feat those who have worked with him say is unlikely to be matched.
"I just loved trying cases as a trial lawyer. Every case is unique, and you become a better judge. Something happens in every trial that doesn’t happen in any other trial. You add that to your library of knowledge and experience because things repeat themselves, and you come across something and you say, “I know the answer to that, and this is what we’re going to do," said Criminal District Court Judge John B. Stevens, Jr.
Pushing for defendants to receive a fair trial without unnecessary delays has been a hallmark of Stevens’ judications, according to Jefferson County District Attorney Bob Wortham.
“He has just done an outstanding job as a criminal court judge,” said Jefferson County District Attorney Bob Wortham. “I don’t know what I could tell you that would fully live up to the way he’s performed in the criminal district court. He is a wealth of knowledge. He knows the criminal code backward and forward.”

As their fight to protect Ukraine and the people of the country continues, we continue to support their efforts as we are able. After sending $50,990 to purchase medical supplies and equipment, we sent a donation of $8,500 towards the purchase of the fire truck that Petro Chen told us about during the July 13th meeting. We are now going to send the remainder of all collections to the Rotary Club Lviv International. If you have not yet done so and wish to contribute, please do so in the next two weeks so we can wire all remaining funds collected to those in grave need in the Ukraine. Please tell any friends, co-workers or neighbors that we are happy to be their conduit to giving to those in need in this war-torn country.

“Play Ball: Rotary Day at the
2022 World Series of Beep Baseball!”

Rotarians who volunteered for the BEEP Baseball Tournament saw a first-hand demonstration of adaptability. The teams, their coaches and umpires were ready to compete and play a game of versatility. The pitchers and catchers who learn the players’ batting range, coaches in the field calling signals, and the fans who support the players are a true picture of volunteering to help players “see” and imagine the game of baseball. Rotarians became a part of the game as outfield and bases umpires with the help of the plate umpire. It was a beautiful (and hot) day but so worth sweating and drinking water. The number of volunteers to host this amazing event shows Beaumont’s spirit and the work done by Beaumont Visitors and Convention Bureau. What a great day to “Play Ball!”
