| 'WINE DOWN WITH ROTARY" |
 |
| Get ready for a good time! |
|
The first wine-tasting event to benefit the Beaumont Rotary Foundation and the education projects it funds, "Wine Down With Rotary," will take place on Thursday, October 1 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Beaumont Event Centre.
Inspired by President Pat Anderson, the event will recognize the selfless work of the members of the Board of Managers while the Club raises necessary funds for our education projects. And, as Pat has said many times, it will meet the FIFTH question of the Four-Way Test: Is it fun?
We are very grateful to the many Rotarians and friends who are sponsors and underwriters for the event. You're the best! The final list is show below. Please click on image below to see it full screen. Please patronize these businesses if appropriate and otherwise express thanks to those who have personally donated.
(Click on image to view the list of sponsors.)
Of course, the event will only be successful with lots of people attending. If you need more tickets, phone the Rotary office on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to purchase for $35. On Thursday, tickets will be sold at the door for $45.
Only 500 tickets will be sold.

It was a great day at NSS!

Planter beds were framed and prepared
for soil to be delivered for planting!

|
On Saturday, September 26, a large group of very capable Rotarians gathered and constructed 8"x 8"x 16" cinder block planter beds where some delicious homegrown vegetables will soon grow!
Because of some great help in advance by Adult Probation volunteers, the cinder blocks were moved to the site and stacked adjacent to the areas where needed. Rotarians moved small amounts of dirt, placed the blocks into place, leveled, and soon saw each of the 15 beds completed!
The nutritious soil will go in this week and the Master Gardeners are anxious to get greens in the ground for the many, many people who will enjoy fresh vegetables in the coming winter months.
While Rotary's commitment on the project is completed, there is an on-going need for volunteers at Nutrition and Services for Seniors on the continuation of this project. Please contact Elaine Shellenberger if you want to spend some time giving of yourself in Service Above Self.
Thank you to the team who was there on Saturday: Craig Lively, Elaine Shellenberger, Michael Perez, Ted Moor (and Barbara Moor), Tim Sudela, Cindy Cherry, Sharae Reed (and daughter, Madison), Ryan Smith, and Lon Felps. (Sorry if you worked and your name was inadvertently omitted, please phone the Rotary office.)

| Congratulations, Rotary University Graduate! |
 |
|
It was a new tune ("I've Been Working on the Railroad") and different lyrics this week, creating a very special song as Dean Lynn Castle awarded a Bachelor of Rotary Science degree to the newest Blue Badge member, Allan Higgins.
Joining her to confer the Bachelor of Rotary Science degree to Allan was President Pat Anderson, pictured right. Congratulations, Allan!
In case you are not aware, even long-time Rotarians can earn advanced degrees. Who will be the first in a long while to earn a Master or Ph.D. in Rotary Science?

| Where's Rotary? |

Look at this! Past President Angela Baker found herself at the meeting place for the very first Rotary Club in Chicago. Though it was a few years ago now, Angela has not changed a bit and still remembers her excitement over finding this plaque, marking the location.

| The Lone Survivor Foundation: |
| Healing the Veteran and Family |
On Wednesday, September 23, our Rotary speaker was Terry Jung, Executive Director of the Lone Survivor Foundation. Terry was introduced by Past President Vernon Pierce (who pronounced Terry's name with eloquence).
The brief narrative in the next two paragraphs describes how the Lone Survivor foundation came into existence, its target population, and the foundations objectives.
After surviving his operations in Afghanistan, Marcus Luttrell, author of the Lone Survivor, the 2007 #1 New York Times best-selling book, returned home to his ranch in Texas, the center of his post-combat recovery and restoration. On the ranch, Marcus had time to recover, to think, and to feel the love and support of close friends and family as he healed from his combat wounds.
Based upon first-hand experiences of what is needed to provide holistic healing beyond standard government programs while honoring his lost comrades from Operation Redwing, Marcus established the Lone Survivor Foundation in 2010. The intent was to bring the wounded service members into the same type of environment that healed Marcus: a place of solitude and beauty where there was a close-knit and understanding support system and a place where the service members and their families could heal together as they all worked through the consequences of war.
The Foundation is dedicated to honoring and remembering American service members by providing unique educational, rehabilitation, recovery, and wellness opportunities to U.S. Armed Forces members and their families.
In 2010, Luttrell established the Lone Survivor Foundation headquartered in Houston, Texas. The Foundation's mission is to "...restore, empower, and renew hope for our wounded warriors and their families through health, wellness, and therapeutic support." The vision is to "...provide exceptional therapeutic, outdoor, and unique opportunities that optimize recovery and healing of affected American wounded service members and their families."
Luttrell and The Lone Survivor Foundation partnered with The Boot Campaign to help show tangible appreciation of America’s active duty military, raise awareness of the challenges they face upon return, and support the transition home.
Terry showed several video clips in his presentation which highlighted the four categories, of veterans who are served by Lone Survivor:
- Those suffering from combat trauma;
- Those who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder;
- Those affected by brain-trauma injuries; and
- Those in chronic pain, which includes amputees.
At this time, the Retreat is conducted over a five-day period with the soldier/veteran. At the six-month mark, another retreat is conducted for the veteran AND family, including children. This further assists in the healing of all.
