Calling attention to ethical behavior in businesses and programs with awards like the T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics is essential to maintaining a strong marketplace. This award recognizes that PEOPLE drive ethics, not organizations.
Ms. Fredrichs will present the TRUST! Principles of Leaders identified by the BBB Center for Character Ethics. The principles embrace the Rotarian 4-Way Test in regards to service, community, character and industry competence and include:
Transformation at the Top
Reinforce and Build
Unite the Team
Steer Performance
Treasure People
! -Enthusiastically Reinvest
Following the speaker's presentation, the prestigious T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics will be presented by the first recipient of the Award, Tom Lamb, Jr. The award was named in honor of his father, T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr., who served as 1942-43 President of our club and as 1951-52 District Governor. It is presented annually to a Beaumont Rotarian who consistently exhibits the highest ethical standards represented by the Rotary 4-Way Test in his or her chosen profession.

Our speakers for Rotary today were the dynamic-duo of Dean Adams, Entergy Grid Manager, and Sam Bethea, Entergy Customer Service Manager. Both were introduced by Vernon Pierce, newly retired from Entergy. Dean Adams covered "Response To Hurricane Harvey" and Sam spoke about "Smarter Energy Future For Texas."
Dean Adams stated that Entergy experts have cited Entergy for "one of the best response to hurricanes." And it seems as though we have really had our share of them!
In the most recent natural disaster to strike our region, the Neches River crested at the saltwater barrier on September 1st 9.7 feet HIGHER than the previous record. Flooded locations made it difficult for crews to get to their target areas, and to transport materials where needed. The amount of water that we received was not normal. Dayton reported 49.31 inches of floodwaters, and Nederland had close to 55 inches!
Areas affected included:
186,000 sustained interruptions
218 poles
489 transformers
452,500 feet of wire/cable
54 isolating devices
46 voltage regulators
In addition, Entergy substations were significantly damaged in Bevil Oaks, Vidor, Kountze, and Silsbee.
Entergy maintained excellent communication with communities, customers, state and federal/FEMA agencies.
Entergy utilized a "mobile substation." As of this date, Entergy is still inspecting and repairing damaged locations.
Entergy employees, like many of us, were hit by Harvey I, II, and III, both at home and at work, during and after the 15-day pummeling that we received in September 2017. Entergy employees sustained damage to their personal properties. 250 employees homes were damaged, while 26 of them were deemed uninhabitable.
Sam Bethea gave a brief presentation on "Smarter Energy Future for Texas." The focus of this presentation was the Advanced Metering System, using the latest technology available. Sam stated that Entergy is committed to helping its customers understand this latest technology which will be initiated in 2019.
The Advanced Metering System will allow the following:
personalizing the energy experience;
upgrade systems and services;
permit faster power restoration, after storms;
improve customer satisfaction;
allow for remote troubleshooting;
2-way communication between the meter and the utility;
make the delivery of power more reliable and affordable.
Thank you for being there when we need you, Entergy!
