Professor O'Brien Stanley teaches courses in film and video production, popular culture, film appreciation and screenwriting for film. In addition, Professor Stanley helps direct (and assists with) the Southeast Texas broadcast program, in which students video meetings of local and regional governmental entities. He is currently working on a short science fiction film. The film, the S.S. Project, pays homage to rockets, rocket scientists, super soldiers, and to 1950’s science fiction films.

Spindletop Rotary Club will be hosting the 2nd annual Rise Against Hunger service project on March 26th! Volunteers are needed to to help package 10,000 meals for people around the world facing chronic hunger. You can volunteer for 30 minutes or the entire time, it's up to you!  Below are the details and a link to register online to volunteer. COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT AT PEITZSCH-MacARTHUR
 
Rotarians will participate in creating an innovative learning lab called “The Nest” at Pietzsch-MacArthur Elementary School (4301 Highland Ave, Beaumont 77705) on Saturday, March 30. According to Community Service Projects committee chair, Deborah Drago, "nest-building" will start at 9:00 a.m. and finish at 3:00 p.m. and will include assembling and setting up supplies and equipment.  Just two hours of your time will help provide PMac “nestlings” with experiential learning opportunities to promote early college awareness.

The Rotary Club of Beaumont in cooperation with the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for a scholarship designed for “Non-Traditional” students pursuing an undergraduate degree at Lamar University. A designated committee of Rotary members will review the applications and select the top students to be interviewed for the one available scholarship. We would appreciate your help in identifying qualified candidates for the scholarship which is generously supported by members of the Rotary Club of Beaumont.
 
Please read the criteria and requirements for the Non-Traditional Scholarship on the webpage:  https://portal.clubrunner.ca/3775/sitepage/rotary-non-traditional-scholarship and share the information with someone who fits the qualifications for the scholarship.  The deadline for applications is April 1, 2019.

Looking for Volunteers!
 
The annual Neches River Festival parade will take place on Friday, April 12 in downtown Beaumont and we are looking for all those who would like to represent the Club in the parade to join us! 
 
There will walker ....
 
And there will be riders!  And there will be plenty of room for everyone!
 
 
 
Ty Coudrain will be driving his truck with those who would prefer to ride.  If you would like to ride in the truck bed, please bring a folding chair.  We will have lots of candy to toss to the crowds of spectators.  This is a great public relations event when we are able to get the Rotary brand out and about town!  Please plan to join us!
 
Check in begins at 5:30 pm at the corner of Pearl and College. We will begin to line up at 5:45 pm and the parade will start at 6:30 pm.

Meet the Newest Rotarians in our Club! 
On Wednesday, March 20, we were happy to welcome two new Rotarians to the Club!

John Arcana was raised in New Orleans, LA and is an LSU graduate who made his way to Beaumont in 2012.  He is a Realtor with Re/MAX One and involved with the SETX Young Professionals Steering Committee and Leadership Beaumont Task Force.  John enjoys CrossFit, golf, and parenting twin 3-year olds, Kennedy Belle and Lane Joseph, with his wife, Amber.
 
Hannah LeTulle is proud of her local roots in southeast Texas.  She was born in Port Arthur, lives in Port Neches and works in Beaumont!  Hannah loves photojournalism and graduated from Lamar with a degree in communications. She is busy with the Press Club of Southeast Texas and the Southeast Texas Young Professional organization, and she is employed as the Sales and Marketing Specialist for the Beaumont Independent School District. Through her job and community involvements, she hopes to make an impact on the community she loves.

Congratulations to Rotary University Graduate!
 
It was an exciting graduation day at Rotary! A Bachelor of Rotary Science degree was conferred to Ruby Martin by Rotary University Dean Joanne Brown.

Ruby Martin is particularly proud of her new badge that was well-earned by a tremendous amount of service.  She has served on the work crew for many of our community service projects including the painting project with Nehemiah's Vision.  She has worked on the "Show Your Colors" flag project every time the opportunity was available since joining the club.  Moreover, she was a big part of the RYLA team by participating in the selection and Orientation of our student delegation, and helping with the send-off and return of our delegation to the camp.
 
If you are not aware, you should know even long-time Rotarians can earn advanced degrees.  Who is the next Master or Ph.D. degree candidate?  Talk with Rotary University Dean, Joanne Brown, about the next step in your Rotary education.

"The Rotary Club of Beaumont and the Three Rivers Council of Boy Scouts Celebrate Centennial"

Alan Sampson, partner of Benckenstein & Oxford, LLP, introduced Les Bentley as our speaker.  Mr. Bentley is the current CEO of the Three Rivers Council of Boy Scouts of America. 

In 1918-19 under the leadership of President Henry Keith, members of the Rotary Club of Beaumont became dedicated to the goal of organizing and sponsoring the first Beaumont Council for Boy Scouts.  Rotarians raised the funds needed and achieved that goal, and Beaumont saw the first Council established and begin to grow and flourish.

BSA Mission Statement:  The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

The Scout Oath:  On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God an my Country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

The Scout Law:  A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

The Scout Motto:  Be Prepared

The Scout Slogan:  Do a Good Turn Daily

Today there are six programs and all are open to boys and girls.

  • Cub Scouts:  For ages Kindergarten to Grade 5
  • Boy Scouts:  For ages 11 to 17
  • Venturing:  For ages 14 to 20
  • Sea Scouts:  For ages 14 to 20
  • Exploring:  For ages 14 to 20
  • Learning for Life:  Elementary through High School – This is designed to support schools and other youth-serving organizations in prepare students for real life circumstances. 

Camping and the outdoors is the classroom of the Scouts.  The Scott Scout Ranch in Woodville covers approximately 715 acres of land in the East Texas Piney Woods.  Open year round on weekends this is the newest addition to the camping and outdoor program opportunities.

Order of the Arrow – Hasinai Lodge, The Wood Badge and of course the Eagle Scout honors are all the ultimate scouting achievements.  These opportunities prepare students for becoming the leaders of the future, the servants of our humanity and the best of what scouting has to offer.

Thanks to our own Rotary Club of Beaumont the Boy Scouts Three Rivers Council has prospered for 100 years.  Rotary invested leadership, funds, and vision into the youth of our community and considers this our most prized legacy.  Rotary continues to support the scouts and is committed to their continued success. Rotarians should be very proud to be known as the founding supporters of the scouting program in Southeast Texas.  Happy Anniversary to the Thee Rivers Council!  We wish you much success for the next 100 years.

 

 
At the end of his presentation, Les Bentley said,  “Rotary has been working hand-in-hand with Scouting all these years!”         
Boy Scout (heading for Eagle Scout) William Bryan, grandson of Rotarian Ed Edson, III, managed to leave school for the opportunity to be in attendance for the Centennial recognition program about the Three Rivers Council's founding and proudly posed ”hand-in-hand” with Les Bentley after his presentation.
