The Rotary Club of Beaumont, TX, is a large and diverse fellowship of inspired business, professional, and civic leaders with significant community connections that foster the ideals of Service Above Self and high ethical standards.
Rotarians will welcome District Governor Betsy Robinson as our guest and speaker at the meeting on Wednesday. As a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Betsy may be known as Dr. Elizabeth Robinson in her practice in League City, but fellow Rotarians call her Betsy. As District Governor, she is responsible for supporting and encouraging the work of all the clubs of the District. The annual visit is a great time for Rotarians to learn of the goals she has for the year and the plans for a successful year for District 5910. Come meet her!

Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. Many Americans refer to Patriot Day as 9/11 or September 11.
The Rotary Club of Beaumont recognizes Patriot Day each year with the "Show Your Colors" display of American flags at subscribers' homes and businesses across the city of Beaumont.
Our subscribers are very grateful for this project and our volunteers.

Do you remember earlier this year when Rotarians participated in a project at Pietzsch-MacArthur Elementary School and helped to put the finishing touches on The NEST Learning Lab? (See photo album of the day our club worked here.) It is a great addition to that school, and the students are learning and growing by taking advantage of the fine facility. The facility was so well-received that Lamar University has decided to continue developing NESTs at the other elementary schools in Beaumont.
The next two schools selected to have a NEST built on the campus are Blanchette and Charlton-Pollard Elementary. Rotarians are needed to help with these two facilities also. On Saturday, September 7th from 9:00-Noon, volunteers are needed at Blanchette Elementary and on Saturday, September 14th from 9:00-Noon, Rotarians are needed at Charlton-Pollard Elementary.

Strategic Planning Committee Actively Engaged
A successful organization or business will find itself actively involved in the process of on-going strategic planning. With a committee under the leadership of Craig Escamilla and the Board of Directors in the lead, the Rotary Club of Beaumont is actively involved in that process.
Recently, the Board approved the Committee contracting with a local firm to help us gain insight into recruiting and retaining members. A small group of Rotarians will be invited to participate in a focus group to assist us in obtaining objective input that will be helpful to the Strategic Planning committee as they address the tough questions that face any organization such as growth, adherence to mission, fiscal matters, and more.
At the August 28th meeting, Craig told Rotarians that the firm of Robin Troy, Neil-Troy Advertising, was engaged by the Board to lead the focus group work so unbiased information could be obtained. Robin will be provided with members' names and contact information and she will select and contact those to participate in the focus groups. If you do NOT want to participate or have your information released to this firm, please let Jacque Chapman (409-842-1913) know right away that you wish to be removed from the pool of candidates. Otherwise, please anticipate that you could receive a cell phone call or an email from roftroy@aol.com.

The much anticipated annual fundraiser, Wine Down With Rotary, will take place on Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 5:30-7:30 at the Beaumont Event Centre. The proceeds from this fundraiser go to the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, Inc. which provides the financial support to the Club's service projects.
Tickets will be distributed to members on Wednesday, so you can begin selling them to your co-workers, friends and neighbors. Please plan to pick up at least one packet of six tickets at the "Wine Sales" table in the back of the Ballroom on Wednesday or visit the Rotary office at your convenience.
We are asking for you to also consider becoming a sponsor of the event or arranging for your business to be a sponsor. A BIG thank you to those who have already done so! We appreciate your support!

"A Season of "Musical Spirits""

Maestro Chelsea Tipton, II, Music Director of the Symphony previewed the 2019-2020 Season of The Symphony of Southeast Texas.
Doug Fair, Executive Director of the Symphony, introduced the program with a brief biographical sketch of the Maestro’s career that included a photo of young Chelsea at the Eastman School of Music. A sought-after guest conductor, Tipton has appeared with numerous major symphony orchestras in the United States and in Europe. In 2011, he was chosen to accompany the pop artist, Sting, on an extensive European tour. He was also invited to conduct the Houston Symphony at the funeral of former President of the United States, George H. W. Bush.
The Maestro’s enthusiasm is contagious and he has brought new dimension to the SOST. He explained that the key elements of a great season are music that challenges and interests the orchestra and that the community will enjoy hearing. Using that formula, he has created a season with the overarching theme of “Musical Spirits.”
The season will open September 14 and will include guest artist Philippe Bianconi who is returning for a fifth engagement with the Symphony. A winner of the Van Cliburn Piano Competition, Bianconi brings music alive with color and passion through his technical wizardry.
The Symphony will travel to the Shangri La Botanical Gardens in Orange for an outdoor concert in October.
On November 16, the SOST will celebrate Mozart and Rossini. The concert will feature Whitney Bullock, SOST principal violinist.
The Romantic Spirit of Music at the February 15th concert will include works by Brahms and Fauré.
The season will close on April 14 with three epics of Symphonic Music. Guest Artist Julian Schwarz will be featured artist playing cello.
Maestro Tipton also discussed the two Pops Concerts that will be presented. “The Piano Man meets the Rocket Man” will feature the music of Elton John and Billy Joel. Several Rotarians in the audience gave this concert a rousing endorsement. “We’re Off to See the Wizard” will be a Pops Multimedia presentation of the movie, “Wizard of Oz” that combines the technological magic of digital mastery accompanied live by your SOST.
Your SOST will again present a “Home for the Holidays” concert featuring carols, sacred works, music from the Nutcracker and other holiday gems. SOST is delighted that Austin native and 2019 Grammy Nominee, Carmen Bradford, will be guest soloist.

In addition to the season, SOST will perform a tribute concert for violinist Yu Gu, a former member of the orchestra, in January. This concert is free to the public.
