The Tyrrell Historical Library is an historical and genealogical library, with comprehensive local history archives. Its development over the past eight years have been varied and numerous in nature. They have included digitization, automation, collection development, and improved efficiency in the functionality of the facility.
Come hear and learn about the valuable items housed behind the majestic walls of this amazing center of area history.

April 26 will be a real celebration! Our youth programs will shine in the spotlight as we recognize the Interact Clubs and the work they are doing. We will name and recognize the
young people selected as Youth Service Above Self Award Recipients (see article below) and announce the recipients of the Rotary Scholarship. Come for a grand day!
On May 3, Chris Hebert, TropicsWatch Manager for StormGeo, Inc., will again join us to give an update on what to expect in the 2017 hurricane season. He has information on a new tool meteorologists will be using this season. Thanks to Vernon Pierce and Entergy Texas, for bringing Chris back to give Rotarians this insight.

Time for Some Grillin' and Fun!
The Spindletop Club and the many youth drivers are revving up the engines and getting cars prepared for the annual Soap Box Derby on May 6 and 7!
Members of our club are asked to help with serving breakfast and lunch for workers at the event. This is a great time and enjoyed by everyone who has the opportunity to work. Mark your calendar now for Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7!

"BISD Update"

Our speaker today was Dr. John Frossard, Superintendent of the Beaumont Independent School District. Dr. Frossard was introduced by Nakisha Burns, Director of Community and Media Relations for BISD.
Dr. Frossard wanted to thank the BISD Board of Managers for agreeing to continue their roles for another year. He and the community recognize and appreciate their sacrifice.
There has been a tremendous amount of progress made since the Board of Managers stepped into the role. Dr. Frossard also stated that there have been mistakes which, when detected, are corrected as quickly as possible.
Dr. Frossard went on to explain that the Region has 32 school districts. With 19,000 students and approximately 2,500 employees, Beaumont ISD is by far the largest. He stated that "whenever you have that many employees, on any given day, there is at least one person who might be doing something that you would wish they were NOT doing." Dr. Frossard likened the administration of any school district to a "bucket of crabs, where there is always one trying to crawl out."
As a result, it can be easier to report what is negative, rather than highlighting all the positive progress being made.
Dr. Frossard said that there were numerous "areas of improvement" and he outlined several:
the curriculum structure has been re-organized;
additional security is in place;
a fleet of buses that was 10 to 15 years old, and extremely costly to repair, is being replaced with a new fleet of buses with GPS;
continued efforts at recruiting and maintaining a quality work-force, along with the addition of incentives, and salary-enhancements/increases;
creation of teacher-student advisory committees;
upgraded classroom technology;
no areas of non-compliance; and,
receiving a "clean audit".
Most everyone will admit the widespread problems and corruption that plagued BISD had our schools in trouble, and that the education and future of our students was in jeopardy when TEA intervened and appointed a Board of Managers. That Board, along with the selection of Dr. Frossard as the Superintendent, has turned the school district around.
Collectively, they have done a miraculous job! Thank you from a very grateful community.
