MEETING PREVIEW
July 20, 2022

"What's Going On with Downtown?"

Tom Bell
Executive Director
Beaumont Main Street

A combination of talent and passion for public relations led Tom Bell to a successful career in marketing and advertising.  His early career included Art Director at Leo Burnet Advertising in Chicago and at Aylin Advertising, the fourth largest ad agency in Texas.  Tom opened Thomas S. Bell Advertising and Design in 1977, and is a successful businessman, accomplished designer, artist, entrepreneur and community supporter.

Tom's interest in local historical preservation, and the immediate need to save and secure our downtown historical properties led him to become one of the original founders of a nonprofit organization.  Founded in 1985, BUILD, Inc. became a Beaumont Main Street in 1992.  Since 2011, Tom as worked full time for Beaumont Main Street.

We welcome Tom Bell to speak about Main Streets, USA and how the program benefits Beaumont.  We will learn what is happening on "Beaumont Main Street!"

As their fight to protect Ukraine and the people of the country continues, members of the Rotary Club of Lviv, Ukraine have identified a need: to purchase a fire truck. Would you like to be a part of this major purchase?  Consider giving now by using the QR code which is shown on the homepage of our website. Copies will be available at the meeting on Wednesday also.

We sent the Lviv Rotary a donation of $8,500 towards the purchase of the fire truck that Petro Chen told us about during the July 13th meeting, but we will send another donation to assist with transportation and shipping costs as well as the purchase of other accessories that may be needed for the life-saving equipment.

PROGRAM REVIEW
July 13, 2022

“Stand With Ukraine!

Petro Cen
Club Project Service Chair
Rotary Club Lviv International
by Chuck Heare

Our guest last Wednesday via Zoom was Petro Chen from Lviv, Ukraine, who is the Project Service Chair for the Rotary Club Lviv – International. He has been our contact in our club’s recent effort to help secure a firetruck for Lviv. Also appearing as a guest via Zoom was Fabian Krotz from Rotary eClub 2000 in Switzerland, which also participated in the project.  Since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the need for firefighting equipment has been critical to fighting fires caused by the bombing that has occurred in Lviv.

Total projected cost for the equipment was 21,500 Euros.  Rotary eClub 2000 donated the equivalent of 10,000 Euros and our club donated $8500 which allowed the Lviv club to initiate procurement of the vehicle and work towards having it delivered to the fire department in Lviv. The department will operate and maintain the truck once it is donated to them.

Petro showed the club pictures of the firetruck and the specifications of the truck indicating that it was equipped with a ladder able to extend to significant heights allowing the rescue of people trapped in the upper units of apartment buildings.  Petro indicated that though the truck being procured was built in 1992, it was in excellent condition, and he was confident that the fire department in Lviv would be able to keep it operating for many years.

Petro was extremely grateful for our club’s help with this project as well as our help earlier this year which provided equipment and supplies to the people of Ukraine. He explained that Lviv is in the western part of Ukraine near the Polish border and is an excellent location to bring supplies into the country.

He then explained that their next project involves the procurement of, or building of, a large tank to store water for the fire department. The trucks frequently need a source of water to fill their trucks because water is not always readily available where they must fight the fires.

It was a real treat to see the results of our efforts to help the people of Ukraine in this challenging time. We are grateful to Petro and Fabian for meeting with our club and giving us this update of our efforts to help Ukraine together.

Anyone interested in additional information about the efforts of Petro and Fabian may contact them via email at chenpetro@gmail.com or fk@kroetz-consulting.ch.
