The Rotary Club of Beaumont, TX, is a large and diverse fellowship of inspired business, professional, and civic leaders with significant community connections that foster the ideals of Service Above Self and high ethical standards.
Americans tend to forget for 3 1/2 years out of every four that it’s the odd old mechanism called the Electoral College that actually determines who wins the presidency. This talk will be a refresher on how the Electoral College works, how it will shape both Republican and Democratic strategies next year, and how attempts and efforts to abolish or reform the system may affect the 2020 election.
Chase Untermeyer was a Texas state representative; an assistant secretary of the Navy under President Reagan; director of Presidential Personnel and director of the Voice of America under the first President Bush; and U.S. ambassador to Qatar under the second President Bush. He is the author of three volumes of diary-based memoirs of the Reagan-Bush era and the book How Important People Act.

A group of Club members are going to Galveston on Saturday, September 7. Would you like to go? No, we won't be on the beach but we will be having a good time at the annual Membership, Foundation, and Public Image Training Seminar.
Everyone is invited to attend and sharpen their skills. In the area of Foundation, there will be discussion about Global Grants and the continuing efforts to End Polio Now with a screening of "Dare to Dream." Membership will focus on innovative ways to recruit new members and engage current members. The Public Image aspect will teach skills about creating a good press release. The keynote and closing addresses will be given by 2017 Rotary Peace Fellow Scott Martin. Scott is a founding member of Mediators Beyond Borders, International and a former co-leader of the Rwanda Team and currently working on the Cambodia Project.
The day begins at 8:00 a.m. and will end by 3:30 p.m. Registration is $32 (includes lunch) and can be paid online by credit card, cash or check. Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. Many Americans refer to Patriot Day as 9/11 or September 11.
The Rotary Club of Beaumont recognizes Patriot Day each year with the "Show Your Colors" display of American flags at subscribers' homes and businesses across the city of Beaumont. Meet the Newest Rotarians in our Club!
Meet Dena Hughes! Dena has served as the Chief Executive Officer for TAN Healthcare - Beaumont since 2016. Her family has a long history in Beaumont, beginning when her great-grandfather moved here from Louisiana in 1910. She and her husband, Daniel live in the Pear Orchard neighborhood with her dogs. Dena is a strong advocate for access to healthcare and health literacy. This sounds like a perfect alignment with RI's "Disease Prevention and Treatment" Area of Focus. Welcome to the club, Dena!

The much anticipated annual fundraiser, Wine Down With Rotary, will take place on Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 5:30-7:30 at the Beaumont Event Centre. The proceeds from this fundraiser go to the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, Inc. which provides the financial support to the Club's service projects.
Tickets will be distributed to members on Wednesday, so you can begin selling them to your co-workers, friends and neighbors. Please plan to pick up at least one packet of six tickets at the "Wine Sales" table in the back of the Ballroom on Wednesday or visit the Rotary office at your convenience.

Spotlight on Rotarian
Rotarian Hannah LeTulle was recently selected to receive a national award for best feature photograph from the Society of Professional Journalists. Hannah, who graduated from Lamar University in May 2018, was awarded for her photograph published in 2018. The former University Press photo editor's photo won first place in SPJ’s region 8, which includes Texas and Oklahoma, advancing to nationals against the winners from the other regions before being named to the honor. Hannah, Sales and Marketing Specialist at Beaumont Independent School District, only recently joined the Rotary Club of Beaumont. We are proud of her accomplishment and proud to call her a member of our Club!

"From the Eyes of a Child: A Perspective of Growing Up in Washington, D.C."

Kate Brooks Carroll is a woman of many interests and titles. She has been involved in health care, non profits and has served on a variety of Boards. Her volunteer work is legendary. While doing all of this she is a mother, wife and the daughter of two pretty awesome parents – Charlotte and Jack Brooks. Growing up in Washington DC she experienced more than her share of encounters with some pretty powerful and interesting characters.
Kate’s dad was known as “The Meanest Man in Congress” and according to Kate he did earn the title. However, he was also one of the most compassionate as well as cunning individuals anyone would enjoy meeting. His keen mind for details kept him in the minds of those who met him. He remembered their family by name, where they lived, what they did for a living, and what they needed from him. The Saturday Mail Pull as he called it was about hearing from his constituency and acting on the requests. Kate said that he read the letters and the replies and it was only after he was finished that she and her siblings could go outside to play.
Kate grew up in an unusual time and place. The bowling alley at Camp David was more enticing than Sunday morning services, the fountain at the Governor’s Mansion was more than inviting while Lady Bird Johnson hosted a black tie event and the halls of the White House were her trails. Although Kate was probably born with an independent streak, she was able to practice her skills with some of the most outspoken individuals of that time.
Although her dad was the power broker, her mom was the woman behind the man. Charlotte brought dignity and grace to Washington. She was a brilliant woman who served on the boards of many of the banks in the area. She brought her children back to Beaumont whenever possible and always considered this her home. Kate and her siblings were able to stay with families in Beaumont and made lifelong friends. She has settled here with her husband because of her love for Southeast Texas.
While speaking to us she had a video of photos of her family and her life. Jack Brooks was with LBJ at his swearing in after the assassination of President Kennedy. Many of the photos were private moments of family and some were public moments of Jack and Charlotte. All were fascinating.
One of Kate’s passions is her own Moonlight Walking Tour of the Memorial Monuments in DC. I asked her to send me her personal suggestions and she gave me details of where to go and in what order. She recommends that you go with a group and to wear comfortable shoes. Go at night and start at the Jefferson Memorial. Follow the tidal basin clockwise to the FDR Memorial. From there go to the MLK Memorial, then to the Reflection Pool where you will be standing in sight of the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the grounds of the Smithsonian and the Capital. Then to the Women’s Vietnam Memorial, the 3 Soldiers Memorial and finally the Vietnam Memorial. If you would like more details about this walking tour, please contact Jacque.
Kate is a delightful speaker with so many stories to tell. She is a role model for our young folks and is certainly her Mother and Father’s daughter. Thank you, Kate, for keeping the memories alive and telling the stories of a time and place that was special as well as intriguing. We are so glad that you and your family call our home your home.
