"Osteopathic Medicine:
Providing a High Level of Wellness"

Stephen McKernan, D.O.
Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs
College of Osteopathic Medicine
Sam Houston State University

Osteopathic medicine provides all of the benefits of modern medicine including prescription drugs, surgery, and the use of technology to diagnose disease and evaluate injury. It also offers the added benefit of hands-on diagnosis and treatment through a system of therapy known as osteopathic manipulative medicine. Osteopathic medicine emphasizes helping each person achieve a high level of wellness by focusing on health promotion and disease prevention.

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine are physicians who see patients as more than symptoms or disease. They get involved in the community and spend time learning about patients as people. They also have solid communication skills and enjoy getting to know a diverse range of people from many different backgrounds and socioeconomic groups.  Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine practice in all medical and surgical specialties.

A significant part of the mission of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at SHSU is to increase the physician workforce in the eastern region of Texas and to increase access to primary care. The COM will accomplish this by recruiting qualified applicants from areas to which they would likely want to return and establish their practice.

There are still many days of cleanup, clearing and restoration to be done in southwestern Louisiana.  If you can and want to volunteer, please contact the District 5910 coordinator, Ruth Leah Finkelstein Suhler, Assistant Governor, at leahone@aol.com.

Disaster Aid USA (DAUSA) is on site and coordinating the clean up in Lake Charles.  It is a moving target as to where the site crew will be on any given day as it all depends on how much gets done each day.  So, there are two options:

  2. If you are planning on utilizing the overnight accommodations available at the First United Methodist Church, please report directly to the Church which is located at 501 North Main, Vidor Texas.  You will need to bring your own cot and bedding or sleeping bag.  You will get your assignment at the Church.

"Rotary on the Road" was successful last week!  We consider it a success whenever members are able to gather together for fun and fellowship and that is exactly what took place last Thursday.

Small groups of Rotarians met at different locations at different times on Thursday and enjoyed a little bit of fall-ish weather while they socialized in an outdoor restaurant.  There was some eating and drinking accompanied by lots of smiles and laughter as members were able to attend a Rotary function again together.

One could hear the questions: "How have you been?"  "What have you been doing since March!?" as everyone was eager to catch up on lost time and reconnect with friends and other Rotarians.

Rotarians got to put their carpentry skills to good use on Saturday, September 26 at Sleep in Heavenly Peace where pieces of 44 beds were cut, drilled, sanded, branded and cleaned. Some children in need of a comfortable place to sleep are going to eagerly welcome them into their homes soon!  Rotarians who were socially-distanced and masked worked steadily all morning, eager to set a record for what they were able to accomplish.

Rotarians and spouses enjoying their engagement in Service Above Self were: Diane Bass, Brad & Debbie Brown, Kris Castle, Cindy Cherry, Leonard Juncker, Sharen Kirksey, Community Service Chair John Lee, Roger McCabe, Wes & Kathleen Shipley and Dana Timaeus.  Members of our club were joined and assisted by four Lamar Rotaract members:  Miguel Arevalo, Chelsea Savoy, Shaun Tran and Tiffany Tran,

Now, the beds are ready for delivery to some anxious children and teens!

Rotarians, we really need you to become a part of the weekly meeting!  Very few people are volunteering for the head table assignments and we spend a lot of time each week trying to recruit talented Rotarians!  Look at your calendar and select a date that is convenient for your schedule.  Red Badges are strongly encouraged to volunteer for this opportunity so you can move closer to your blue badge and members can get to know you better too.

PROGRAM REVIEW
September 23, 2020

"The Health of Some Non-Profits
During the COVID Pandemic"

Carolyn Fernandez
Jason Moore
and
Paula O'Neal
representing three
Health & Human Services Non-Profits
by Chuck Heare

Rotary was treated to a very informative presentation last Wednesday from three crucial non-profit organizations in Southeast Texas serving in the area of health and human services.

Carolyn Fernandez began talking about the faith-based Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas which helps low to moderate income clients across nine counties. She said they provide services such as disaster relief, a soup kitchen, counseling, immigration and other services through seven different programs. Neither employees nor clients must be catholic to work with the organization.

Jason Moore, Commanding Officer of Salvation Army, said it was established in 1865 and came to Beaumont in 1901. It provides food, clothing and shelter to the homeless and works with boys and girls through its Boys and Girls Clubs. He emphasized that eighty-two cents of every dollar donated to the Salvation Army goes directly to helping those in need.

Paula O’Neal, Executive Director of Some Other Place (SOP) then stated that it was established in 1968 to provide the basic needs of food and clothing to the homeless in Jefferson County. It is supported by the community, especially the local churches.

All three charities have been significantly affected by the COVID virus, limiting their capacity to serve their clients because of social distancing requirements. Food has been limited to takeout only and counseling has been handled virtually where possible and by appointment only. Walk-in services have been suspended. SOP volunteers tend to be those most at risk to the virus, which has hampered its ability to serve its clients. The staff of the organizations have had to go to staggered working shifts and observe social distancing in their workplaces.

How can we help? We can continue to support these organizations financially. We can volunteer to help prepare meals, volunteer to help with homework of the boys and girls in the Salvation Army Boys and Girls clubs, or just contact the organizations individually and ask them how you might help. All three continue to meet needs of those in need in our communities even in these challenging times.

The program last Wednesday was well-facilitated by Deborah Drago. We are extremely fortunate to have these organizations in our community.
