In the 1920s, the first Shriners Hospital was opened primarily to help children who had contracted polio. Today, the majority of our 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children provide care for children with all types of orthopaedic conditions, including clubfoot, hip disorders, limb deficiencies and deformities, scoliosis, and orthopaedic difficulties related to cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular conditions. We also offer a range of multidisciplinary services, including physical, occupational and recreation therapies; orthotics and prosthetics; child life activities; and transitions programs to help each child grow into a happy, healthy, productive adult.
Shriners Hospitals in Boston, Cincinnati, Galveston, and Sacramento provide critical, surgical and rehabilitative care for all degrees of burn injuries. Each state-of-the-art hospital offering burn care provides treatments for: acute and sub-acute burns; healed burns; scarring that has caused contractures or limited mobility; smoke inhalation; facial scarring or deformities; and other skin conditions. Our locations have the capacity to provide laser treatments to lessen the effects and appearance of burn-related scarring.

A good number of hard-working Rotarians met at Peitzsch-MacArthur Elementary School on Saturday, March 30 and had a great time helping with the creation of a fantastic learning center which the young students are really going to enjoy! To hear Rotarian Teresa Simpson talk about the dream that is coming to fruition right before her eyes is exciting and rewarding. She and Norman Bellard used their educational expertise and, along with the South Park Neighborhood Association and the school principal, have designed the room and all the components to be included. Teresa and her daughter, Kyra, have invested personally in the project with Kyra painting the entire room. Suzette Broussard, a very talented artist, has added some beautiful and very realistic murals to the walls. Rotary purchased some of the furnishings and Entergy is contributing some electronic items that will provide the students with state-of-the-art learning tools.
